Na chińskim rynku jest całkiem sporo modeli czytników, o których nawet nie usłyszymy. No chyba, że są wypuszczone przez znaną markę. Tak było w przypadku dwóch czytników Xiaomi. Polski internet był zalany artykułami, w których wieszczono, że oto nadchodzi „zabójca Kindle”. Minęły miesiące i lata, a nic takiego się nie stało. Wynika to m.in. z niedopasowania oprogramowania w czytnikach Xiaomi do użytkowania poza Chinami. Tudzież dostępność tego sprzętu na świecie jest słaba. Dlatego ja akurat się nie ekscytowałem kolejnymi czytnikowymi nowościami tej marki. Ale tegoroczna nowość jest na tyle ciekawa, że sam bym się jej chciał przyglądnąć. Serwis gizmochina.com poinformował przedwczoraj o spodziewanej premierze Xiaomi InkPalm 5.

Przez ostatnie lata wiele razy byłem podpytywany, czy pojawił się już następca Kobo Mini, TrekStora Pyrusa Mini czy PocketBooka Mini. I do tej pory miałem na te pytania tylko odpowiedź negatywną. No może poza także testowanym przeze mnie telefonem YotaPhone 2. Niestety ta firma akurat padła, a telefony z ekranami E Ink też raczej nie leżą na półkach sklepowych. W chińskich sklepach można wciąż znaleźć kilka małych czytników, które wyglądają obiecująco, ale zupełnie by się u nas nie sprawdziły z racji ich ścisłego powiązania z wymaganiami chińskiego rynku (np. brak menu choćby po angielsku). Sytuacji pod tym względem nie zmieni też zapewne wspomniany Xiaomi InkPalm 5. Przede wszystkim jego dostępność będzie ograniczona, podobnie z możliwością korzystania poza Chinami. Ale przynajmniej sprzętowo mógłby się spodobać osobom poszukującym małego, bardzo mobilnego czytnika.

Xiaomi InkPalm 5, jak sama nazwa wskazuje ma być urządzeniem niewielkim. Z racji małego (jak na czytniki) ekranu, gładkiego szkła na froncie i smukłej obudowy, wygląda raczej jak smartfon niż „tradycyjny” czytnik. W nowym Xiaomi zastosowano mianowicie ekran wykonany w technologii papieru elektronicznego o przekątnej 5,2 cala (13,2 cm) i proporcjach zbliżonych do tych, które montuje się w telefonach (ok. 16:9). Przy rozdzielczości 1280 x 720 pikseli ma to zapewnić całkiem ostry obraz 284 ppi. Wbudowane oświetlenie jest z opcją regulacji temperatury barwowej. W środku obudowy znajduje się 32 GB pamięci na pliki i aplikacje użytkownika. W dolnej części obudowy umieszczono gniazdo USB C. Dostępne mają być dwie wersje kolorystyczne: szary i miętowozielony. Całość waży tylko 115 g. Czytnik pracuje pod dość aktualnym Androidem 8.1 (korzystającym z 1 GB pamięci operacyjnej), być może będzie więc więc opcja instalowania własnych aplikacji. Domyślnie w systemie jest dostęp do pięciu sklepów oferujących e-booki: Amazon Kindle, WeChat, Variety, Jingdong i Handy.

Potwierdza się  przypuszczenie, że w czytniku nie można wybrać innej opcji, niż menu po chińsku. Posiadając jednak odpowiednią wiedzę, około pół godziny oraz sporo samozaparcia, da się częściowo zmienić menu na anglojęzyczne, tak samo jak w niektórych androidowych telefonach przeznaczonych na chiński rynek.
