A very interesting read. The first 100 or so pages are quite slow but after that it picks up pace. He captures the duplicity and difference of victorian era New York quite well.

I LOVE this book. One of the best period mystery/thrillers ever, and I wish Carr had continued in this series. In both this and The Angel of Darkness, he tells the story from the point of view of one of the characters in a group that surrounds Laszlo Kreizler, the "alienist" of the title, an exper...

Well written and engaging, this period piece murder mystery which takes place in New York City was a bit long, but I enjoyed it.

A couple of pages before finishing The Alienist, I declared that it is the most complete mystery I have ever read. Months after finishing this book, I still don't think that was hyperbole. Using the milieu of New York City in the middle of the Gilded Age, historian-turned-novelist Caleb Carr pits th...

It's nice to read a thriller once in a while. It has good beginning, gory details and interesting historical persona. The pacing could be better especially when the character was showing off to the other about something he realized before the other. How the explanation was dragged was not so fun to ...

Excellent period tale of 19th forensics and serial killer. Obviously well researched but surprisingly literary and detailed.
