I liked this book, but didn't love it. I think the raving reviews made me expect too much.

Great historical mystery. It's almost more interesting when it's setting the scene of old New York. But it's also good as a mystery.

Serial killer around 1900 in NYC. Theodore Roosevelt as chief of Police. Interesting look at how these crimes were treated in the old days. Nominated for The Bram Stoker Award - 1994.

This was a big, authentic, first novel that totally captures the reader and take them back in time to olden NYC. I am a history nut and the historical facts are all on point. The characters are all flushed out beautifully and the storytelling is strong and honest.

The setting, the concept, and the historical characters made this pretty appealing. Years after the fact, I can't remember a thing about it.
