In November 1974, the Lucan family nanny Sandra Rivett was bludgeoned to death their fashionable Belgravia townhouse. Lord Lucan was identified as the attacked by his wife, who was also assaulted, and the peer fled London in a borrowed car. The car was later found abandoned in the British coastal town of Newhaven, but Lucan was never located
Conspiracy theorists have since delighted in speculating on the fate of Lord Lucan. The most likely outcome is that he commited suicide shortly after the crime, and his body was never found; however, many people believe that the peer's rich and powerful friends helped him flee the country, and he subsequently lived out the rest of his life in an overseas paradise. Recent speculation has centred on the African country of Gabon, after it was suggested that the peer's children had travelled there in the 1980s.
