An astonishing book, its language and style are hypnotic, ironically hypnosis is referred to over and over again as an explanation used by by the citizens in the novel who refuse to admit the possibility of what they are experiencing, and so did I. Powerfully evocative of a period and culture, at t...

WOW.A brilliant, brilliant masterpiece. Clever and unique and one of a kind.I`m not sure I fully understood it, a bit overwhelming at times and dragged at times too especially the Jesus chapters, the ball and toward the end.But that ending, that damn ending is EPIC.

Seriously, let me out of this book, page 15 or so, I think. No one but a masochist or similar true believer would have inculcated a gruesome, morose system to the degree portrayed in this book's opening. There's probably nothing worse than a humourless Russian.

The devil went down to Georgia Moscow, he was looking for a soul to steal to satirize the Stalinist Soviet Union. Check.Bizarre, absurd, slap-stick, Kafkaesque, Celine-like, Dostoevsky-worthy, and the like. The adjectives and accolades and comparisons used to describe this book over the years are en...

'I’m to follow him there?’ the master asked anxiously, holding the bridle. ‘No,’ replied Woland, ‘why run after what is already finished.’Such a fascinating clash of narration and character, story and story-telling, a kind of collapse of The Devils and Alice in Wonderland. I enjoyed its playfulness ...

I must have gone through some kind of angsty Russian stage when I was in my mid-teens but this remains one of my all-time favourite novels.

So, I just couldn't get into this one.I really wanted to. Really, I did. I know it is supposed to be this magical politically satirical foray into Stalinist Russia. I know that it has a scathing social commentary. Honest. I'm a fan of absurdist political satire a la Vonnegut, but I just wasn't fe...
