The Mocking of Christ, Carl Bloch’s masterpiece, probably holds more significance today than it ever has before. When the painting was produced in 1880, much of Europe was undergoing rapid and immense change with the industrial revolution. Today, the world experiences change at an even faster pace, yet one message of Bloch’s painting stays constant: in a world of rapid transformation Christ’s focus on us does not change. In this work, M.D. Jones analyzes the Mocking of Christ by Carl Heinrich Bloch. M.D. Jones states that because of the culture of Bloch’s time when he created the piece, its medium, scale, detail, and focus used, one can infer that Bloch wanted the viewer to ponder Christ and His atoning sacrifice. The painting illustrates Christ’s commitment to us, and because His sacrifice for us doesn't change we must decide if we will be witnesses of Christ.
