I have been very undecided about this. Although personally not affected by GR's latest policy, I do like to see people treated fairly and therefore have thought about supporting this exodus. However, I have now made my mind up, for two reasons. Firstly, Book Depository is also owned by Amazon, this is why it is the alternative choice on the drop-down menu (for UK users - I know other countries have more choices). Secondly, I am very happy with the groups I follow on GR, they have excellent books for monthly reads as well as fun challenges, and I find within these groups good, friendly interaction. In addition, as I always did in the past when looking for sites to keep track of my books, I searched for a few, and BookLikes kept coming up with 'no results'. My to-read list does have some obscure ones! Although I can simply export my BookReads list, to me it indicates that maybe BL isn't for me; GR has rarely failed to already have books I want to add.
Just to clarify, if BookLikes is supported by Amazon anyway, and while I am not able to find an independent place to interact with book lovers, I might as well stay with GoodReads as they have all the things (and more) that I want in such a site. This is a decision made due to my own situation; however I do very much understand the decision others have made.
Sarah, I can tell you that I had never had a review deleted in my three years. I've been on the US best reviewer list for quite a while. And I when I joined the protest about shelving and discussing author behavior, and started to become more engaged, GR had no problem deleting six of my reviews and sending a letter about it. When I posted hydra reviews instead, they deleted those and threatened to kick me from the site. It's pretty clear there is no mutual relationship in GR's mind. I am also tired of the author spam and the continual promotion.
BL uses Amazon as a source ("affiliate" status), and we can choose to use them as a source, or not (there's a tab in settings). Whereas they own GR hook, line, and sinker.
