I'm so glad I started reading this series (they can be read as stand alones, but I'm do OCD to read them out of order). They remind me of Mercedes Lackey's Five Hundred Kingdoms (book 1 is The Fairy Godmother) without the magic. I didn't like this quite as much as the first, but it was a lot of fun.
