I read this when I was a kid and thought it was amazing. Then I reread it as an adult and didn't enjoy it nearly as much. Sort of like a great meal you had but when you go back it doesn't live up to the memory. Still my childhood memory of the book dominates and I would definitely recommend it.

I love the relationships between the two dogs, and the dogs and the boy. It's a charming story, well told, if you can get past the violence of using dogs to kill raccoons. I am NOT a fan, but at least it is mitigated somewhat by realizing that for poor families in that time and place, it was a way o...

I read this book in 6th grade, and it made my classmate cry. It wasn't really an enjoyable read, and was pretty depressing.

I remember that I really liked this book clear up until "It" happened! Where the Red Fern Grows is the saddest book I think I've ever read in my life! I've also avoided this book since I read it in elementary school about 30 years ago! My poor husband was not familiar with this story at all, and ...

What kind of book is this??Boy saves enough money to buy dogs.Boy loves dogs.Dogs love boy.Boy and dogs hunt coons.Dogs die.Boy is heartbroken.Boy moves to town.WHAT?The only thing that could have made this book more "meaningful" is if Billy's mom died too.
