Few would argue that the Nazi Germany Regime was brutal and inhumane. The atrocities that were committed by the Nazi’s will remain a shameful chapter in history for possibly centuries to come. Beyond that though are the humans behind the swastika. This book takes a look at those men.
In Poland, the Germans fought for ground, taking a beating on all sides. At times, they were forced back but eventually prevailed. While we do not celebrate their win, the story behind it is a tactical lesson. A lesson that even modern military leaders can take note of. This story is not just about the Germans though but the valour of the Polish men who fought back against them as well.
There is the story of a German soldier that earned one of the highest medals for combat action after fighting for over 50 days of close combat until he was injured and captured by the Soviets. Read about his war actions and the other honours that he earned. Find out if he survived the war or if he was lost forever in Soviet hands.
Then there is the chilling story of Stalingrad and the dreaded Kessel. This was not just a battle of a city but of a larger scale. The horrors that awaited the solders there were some of the worst in the war outside of the Germans own concentration camps. Read about what desperate measures, desperate men took in order to survive.
This book takes a look at the other side of the lines without judgement or endorsement. If you ever wondered what happened on the other side of the battle, this is the perfect place to start.

“I was a little hesitant to buy this. Honestly, I was worried that it would be some type of a pro- Nazi book. From the start though, the author lets us know that his aim is not to glorify the Nazi’s but to give an equal telling. I can support that. History is very important and if we are going to understand it, we need to see both sides of the story. There is no glorification of the Nazi crimes but there is pleanty to see here. The stories really pulled be in and I almost forgot that I was reading about the enemy. I loved the casual academic style that this is written in and while the topic is risky, I think he handled it well. Great book!” Shawna H – Virginia Beach ( USA)
“There is undoubtedly a risk taken when writing anything less than a scathing assessment of the Nazi’s. In the case of this book it was a risk well taken. The author did a superb job of not glossing over the actions of the Third Reich’s beasts but also giving them a fair shake in the process. I have to say that I learned a thing or two as well about the challenges that faced the Germans. The Kessel is the stuff of nightmares. I hadn’t heard of anything like it before and it was truly shocking. I enjoyed this book through and through.” London (UK)
