SAMPLE PROMPTS

Alien Invasion/First Contact
A microbial alien species invades Earth through water, feeding off it and traveling through it. What happens when humans, animals, and plants ingest the aliens while drinking? Can the aliens transform the properties of water and otherwise control it? How could humans possibly defend themselves from such an invasion?

Dystopian
A society evolves in which personal autonomy is entirely taken away from the people—so much so that identifying pronouns (“I,” “we,” etc.) are removed from common language and a collective mentality develops. How could your protagonist break out and fight for individuality? What are the possible benefits of a society that values groups over individuals? What other aspects of culture would change in this society?

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

If you're in a creative rut, know that I've been there, too. I spent far too long struggling with my inability to write, and it negatively affected several aspects of my life. That's why I wrote 100 Science Fiction Writing Prompts – because I know what it's like to feel creatively empty, and I want to help other writers beat their own blocks.

In this booklet, I've combined techniques from my days in university (I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing) with the real-world lessons I learned from writing my own fiction novels. The result? A list of 100 prompts to get your creative gears spinning. But that's all I can do. The rest is up to you.
