3.5 stars Hmmm... I liked this book, but it seemed a little slow at times. And actually, I was completely shocked when it ended (it was a good non-cliffhanger but with clear continuation for the story), but I just couldn't believe it was over already. This story basically goes through Alanna's pr...
Probably the very best fantasy book/series I have ever read. 1. Admirable, strong heroine2. Pitch perfect writing.3. Fantastical fanatsy world.4. Great plot.A must-read for girls of all ages- we can learn a few things from Alanna.
This was my first TP and was leant to me by a friend that live in my building in my first year at uni. I was a long way from home, stressed out, confused and lonely and needed a magical place to escape to... and this was it.Alanna is a fierce heroine, unlike any other I had read up until then. I f...
I'm unavoidably rereading this through a haze of nostalgia, but I still think it's one of the top YA fantasies around. Pierce covers a lot of ground in a small number of pages, using an episodic format to great effect. There's a slightly overused tendency to resort to deus ex machina to move things ...
I read these in middle school and haven’t read them since. I thought I might as well give them another try. Major eh. I think it’s really Pierce’s writing style which tends to consist of short little scenes that aren’t very well connected. Also, I get tired of Young Girl Overcoming Oppressive Societ...
It was faster than "Trickster's Choice," the only other Pierce book I'd read to date, but not a whole lot better. At least there was slightly less whining initially. The whole girl-has-to-pretend-to-be-boy-in-order-to-overcome-prejudice- and-strike-a-victory-for-feminists-everywhere-as-well-as-fulfi...
This was exactly what I was expecting: A YA fantasy about a girl disguising herself as a boy in order to train to be a knight. A little on the bland side - no one is terribly complicated - but there are adventures with gods and magic. Just right for bedtime stories, as was the reader's voice.
An enjoyable introduction to fantasy for young readers.Alan, born Alanna and disguised as a boy, is single-minded and determined to become a knight. She's at a gawky age where her self-awareness is low and she has no idea of the effect she has on others. She stumbles through situations and learns fr...
Alanna and her twin brother switch identities so she can become a knight and he can study magic. A very enjoyable training montage ensues, wherein Alanna shows herself to be stalwart, stubborn, and willing to do a great deal of extra work in order to achieve her dream of being a warrior. But physi...
