Nice blurb! I love anything that asks questions about free will/fate, and whether or not man has any true role in shaping his life. I'll look forward to reading the book to see what answers you come up with. I'll get you invited to the network and will friend you on FB as well to get that started... more »
Welcome--and congratulations! There are many indie writers here as well (along with traditional ones, too). Do you know about the Fantasy Sci-Fi network on FB? Many writers here also support each other there, and help promote one another's books, web pages, etc. I can get you an invitation to j... more »
Here you go: it's Chapter 10 that diverges the most from the 'official' version, and this is the one that the most recent BBC version decided to film (to be different, I suppose). Without giving too much away, I find it to be far less satisfying dramatically or emotionally than her revision, but w... more »
I'm anxious to read it again for sure. The original ending is very short--just a chapter, really--so it won't require much extra time. Anxious to see what everyone thinks; I've always loved it, but I haven't read it in a while. more »
Try to resist watching these until after you read, but the 1996 film of Persuasion uses the revised ending, but the more recent (I think 2007) BBC version used the original ending. I think the Oxford World's Classics version contains both endings, and I know the Norton Critical does...but I bet you... more »
I'll re-read Persuasion gladly--it's probably my favorite. We should try to get a version (or make available) that has both endings. She revised the ending shortly after writing it, and it might be fun to discuss if she improved the original, or first thoughts were best. more »
I apologize, I think it was my suggestion...I'm about 60 pages in, and yes, it's a tad slow but still has a glimmer of interest left. I'm keeping an open mind. Dracula, though it grabs you from the beginning, is a different kind of book. Maybe if we keep in mind that this (like Dracula) is one of... more »
Sounds great--I finally have no excuse not to read Stoker's novel! It's a good line-up as well, especially for an Anglophile such as myself. It will be fun to read Treasure Island again (it's been well over a decade). more »
I've never seen or even heard of it! How interesting... I'm pushing my way through Clara Reeve's The Old English Baron, a slight re-writing of Otranto right now. It's 'gothic' chiefly by its use of a quasi-Medieval setting and some rumored ghosts and spirits. Not a great book by any means, but i... more »
