Despite its initial intentions of being a country of liberty and equality, America has been plagued by institutionalized racism since its inception. Every culture of color has suffered, in some form or another, from the ill effects of association with the Western European patriarchy: Native Americans saw their lands, languages, cultures, and populations decimated; Africans were utterly subjugated through slavery until the Thirteenth Amendment took effect, and then for over another century through various de jure and de facto forms of segregationalist laws and policies.
