King Baryn has decided that if he marries his daughter Amalie to a high-ranking noble, the rebellious marlords might be pacified and he might be able to avert a war. So he invites all the young serramar to the royal city to court his daughter. To protect Amalie from any unsavory suitors, the mystic Cammon is installed to monitor all of Amalie’s courtships, because Cammon is a reader who can tell if someone harbors violence or malevolence in his heart. Much to the dismay of her advisors, Amalie begins to fall in love with the wholly unsuitable Cammon. Even worse, war comes to Gillengaria anyway, and Amalie can only be kept safe through the combined efforts of the Riders, the mystics—and the wild raelynx that has mystical powers of its own.

This was a great book. It was full of excitement! Princess Amalie's personality seemed perfect for her role as future queen as well as being the one Cammon falls for. Her personality is perfect for other reasons, too, but I don't like to give too many spoilers! Between the two of them was a cute rom...
Such a great book! Just finished it today and I loved it as much if not more than the others. Even though the other books have been in the perspective of different people each time I still love Senneth the best and I make sure to look and see if her name is there. I love seeing her and Tayse togethe...
2.5 - 3 starsI would rate it three, but there were issues. Many, but the only truly salient one was that all the characters that I used to love I truly grew to dislike or despise here and how awful is that? Mostly b/c of their various attitudes toward Amalie and Cammon, ranging from "Of course you c...
It is okay book though it seems too long for it is, a fairly standard romance story. The supposedly minor characters Kirra and Senneth take over the story for long sections, which is fine because they are good characters. As for the main characters, I had a problem with Cammon. He seemed like two...
This was the best out of the series (Twelve Houses) for action and suspense. I would have liked Senneth to have been the one to give Halchon his just dessert, but the result was just as good. This was a worthy series and will look forward to reading more of Shinn's work.
