Edge of Apocalypse (The End Series #1) - Tim LaHaye,Craig Parshall

This book could almost be ripped right from today's headlines. I found some parallels between this book and Rosenberg's current political thriller series, which I also really am enjoying. I love it when talented authors present a fictional account of real world events occurring in End Times prophecy. I will continue to follow this series.

Apocalypse 02

Review written for MM Good Book Reviews

This book is part of a series and can be read in any order. Adrian has just received the worst news of his life but he forges on only to discover that what had happened before was just a blip compared to what he now faces. Forced to make an emergency landing Adrian lands in what only can be hell, the world is no longer the same but Adrian's responsibilities to his passengers means he has to make a sacrifice... of himself. Paul Mendoza is a convict who finds himself following an evil child serial killer when the prison they are held in crumbles around them, but taking the pilot as his slave has him rethinking his position. Despite the life Mendoza has led Adrian is convinced that there is some good in the man, but getting him away from Ghost, the leader of the criminals, proves to be much more dangerous than either of them thought.

So for those of you who read The Event this book runs parallel and ends just before the two groups meet up. We see the full circumstances that we only heard a bit about and meet the people who survived the plane crash landing and the vile criminals who haunt their area. Adrian is the man who we follow from the beginning, he receives bad news and sees his hopes and dreams being shattered, but finding himself in a emergency situation he proves to himself that he can be the man that is needed in an emergency. Being taken prisoner has him still believing in his dreams and for what he will face he has to cling to his dreams to survive. Mendoza believes firmly that he doesn't deserve redemption but fighting Adrian's dreams and trying to shatter them doesn't work and Mendoza is soon beginning to believe himself.

We discover the horrors that still exist from the human world, the vileness that managed to survive and is determined to rule the world with darkness, trying to gather together the dark ones who also revel in pain and destruction. Adrian and Mendoza aren't the only characters that we want to meet, we discover Black Rose and Serpent who aren't as bad as they seem and Ian a doctor who was on his way to meet other survivors. And then we have some characters who we want to wash ourselves clean after we meet them like Ghost who is vile and a mysterious young man (who we also met in The Event) who seems to thrive on lost hope.

This is one of those stories that you can't easily peg, because the criminal element changes the basic survival needs, it also adds a darker element to the sexual aspects of the story as there are some scenes of reluctant sexual contact. The scenes between Adrian and Mendoza are darkly hot and they really work together, with Adrian making Mendoza face the future and not the past. There are some scenes of violence and at times even knowing the final outcome (if you read The Event that is) you wonder if they will get away alive. The setting that we are given lets us know of the bleakness that surrounds the characters and it lets us know the fear they are going through, the story is perfectly written and I can't wait to see whose story is next.

I recommend this to those who love surviving the Apocalypse, finding love in dangerous situations, working towards redemption and an ending that is happy for now with hope for the future.

A Kiss Before the Apocalypse (Remy Chandler Series #1)
A Kiss Before the Apocalypse (REMY CHANDLER NOVEL) - Thomas E. Sniegoski Remy Chandler lives a life he enjoys, with his dog and his wife. But now his wife is dying, age is something he doesn't have to deal with but she does, and there's nothing really he can do about it. He is an angel who decided to investigate what being human was like and found himself living among them. Deathless he can communicate with anything that has sentience and after several centuries he can put his hands to most jobs. He's investigating for a divorce case when the man shoots his lover and then himself and fails to die. What disturbs Remy more is that the man can see him for what he really is. It's then that Remy finds out that the embodyment of death is missing, that he has a mission to find him and that there's rumours of an apocalypse, and his dog Marlowe needs a run in the park! Marlowe steals the show in the book. I liked Remy and a lot of it reminded me of Pratchett and Gaiman's Good Omens, (only without the antichrist) I was quite pleased to see that there were sequels.

Hunger (Riders of the Apocalypse Series)
Hunger - Jackie Kessler It's about a girl with anorexia and her delusions of being Famine riding the pale horse. When she attempted suicide by ingesting some of her mothers pills , Death came knocking at her door in the form of a postman . literally. She answers the door and was given a package and told that she was Famine. Inside the package was of course the Scales. quote: She, Lisabeth Lewis, seventeen and anorexic and suicidal and uncertain of her own path- she'd done something that mattered. She'd ignored her own pain and had helped others.

Demon Apocalypse (Demonata Series #6)
The Demonata #6: Demon Apocalypse - Darren Shan As the Demonata series progresses, it becomes ever more complicated and interesting. It also becomes more gross and imaginative. The story of Demon Apocalypse starts directly after the happenings of the fifth book of the series, Blood Beast. Grubbs is still on the plane with Lord Loss and Juni, and things aren't looking up for him. We also meet a lot of characters from the previous books again, but I won't spoil the surprise on that one.The book instantly throws you into the gruesomeness. I quote the first few lines of Demon Apocalypse:"A demon shaped like a giant scorpion digs its stinger into a woman's eyes. As they pop, it spits eggs into the bloody sockets, then watches with its almost human face as the eggs hatch and wriggling maggots feast on her flesh."Sheesh, way to easing us in! I'm surprised by the gore-factor of these novels every single time, even though I know before I start reading them that they will be gross. Mr Shan really doesn't spare us in any way in terms of graphic ways of letting people die. I'm not sure how much I like his approach, but he is really good at what he does. I very much enjoyed the storyline of Demon Apocalypse. I was slightly disappointed that Mr Shan uses a plot device he has used before in one of his other books (not telling you which one though) but I guess there really was no other way. I love the way the series is starting to tie together. The first few Demonata books can be read as seperates, but starting from book five they really can't any more. If you don't know the background you'll be missing out. I'm curious to see where the story goes, since there are still four books to read. The next book, Death's Shadow will feature Bec again. She's my favourite character, so that ought to be fun!
