Duck! (Avian Shifters, #1) by Kim Dare 4 Star Review !
Duck! - Kim Dare

Raised among humans, Ori Jones only discovered he was an avian shifter six months ago. Unable to complete a full shift until he reaches his avian maturity, he still can’t be sure of his exact species.

But with species comes rank, and rank is everything to the avians. When a partial shift allows the elders to announce that they believe Ori to be a rather ugly little duckling, he drops straight to the bottom rung of their hierarchy.

Life isn’t easy for Ori until he comes to the attention of a high ranking hawk shifter. Then the only question is, is Ori really a duck—and what will his new master think when the truth eventually comes out?

Review

I have mixed feelings about this book but what is done well is done so well I really enjoyed it.

This is an excellent re imagining of The Ugly Duckling. The relationship between the heroes is compelling and a great romance.

However, everything else in this world gets smudged. We get no other characters really. The world seems cruel beyond measure but it can't all be because of things we see.

The tight lens is good but I wanted more world building overall.

A story of courage
Flit and the Avian Flock - Kyle Metzger

With his book, Flit and the Avian Flock, author Kyle Metzger shares with his readers the story of the brave and determined hummingbird, Flit.

It is the time of the year when the Avian Flock meet for their annual Migratory Council at The Grand Aviary and report their findings concerning the Bird Kingdom, including the tragic death of two members, to General Rightwings. After the reports are given,Maka, Rightwings’s trusted assistant, announces a three-day competition among all birds to replace Albert and Sable.

Flit had always dreamed of becoming one of the hundred birds of the elite and honored Avian Flock, protectors of the Bird Kingdom. Once the official rules were posted, Flit knew that he would master the first two events but would need cleverness and determination to successfully complete the last one. Flit's attitude and commitment inspired other small birds to register and prepare for the competition, too.

Flit studied and trained hard. The first two days were exhausting but Flit was still holding on. On the third day only five birds remained, all of them aiming to have their plumage painted gold, an indication of their honorable membership in the Kingdom's elite.

I highly recommend Flit and the Avian Flock to families looking for an entertaining tale, that can be enjoyed by all and that weaves values and morals into the storyline. Old and young will be engaged as they follow Flit, the small hummingbird, overcoming challenges and obstacles and remaining focused on his goal---to become a member of the Avian Flock.

The end of the book brought tears to my eyes with its message that endurance, commitment, and humility make the impossible a reality for those who believe!

Mathew 23:12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

Duck! (Avian Shifters Series, Book One)
Duck! (Avian Shifters Series, Book One) - Kim Dare There is just something about this book I love

When it comes to BDSM books, I am very picky as to what I read. The master/slave dynamic is one I stay away from unless it is either paranormal or fantasy setting. But this world Kim Dare created just sucked me right in.
The avian society is harsh and abusive, while there is structure there, there is no real protection for the lower ranks. Ori spent the majority of the book in the lower ranks coping with abuse from the other shifters who believed it was their right to abuse him.
Ori is a beautiful soul, who's natural submissive nature put him in the position of being manipulated and abused for his whole life. Ori's confusion and devastation after his first shift was heartbreaking but the pleasure we see during his submission was breathtaking.
