Slow Burn: Destroyer, Book 3, a novel by Bobby Adair
Slow Burn: Destroyer - Bobby Adair

Slow Burn: Destroyer, Book 3, a novel by Bobby Adair is a compelling book. I gave it four stars.

I received a complimentary copy from Amazon. That did not change my opinion for this review.

"But the brave medical staff, holed up on the tenth floor of the hospital, and running out of provisions, has decided to take matters in hand by exposing themselves to the virus, and shooting those who “turn.”"

Black Virus (Black Rust Book 1), A Novel by Bobby L. Adair
Black Virus (Black Rust Book 1) - Bobby Adair
Black Virus (Black Rust Book 1), A Novel by Bobby L. Adair is a frightening futuristic book. I gave it four stars.

It starts with Lucy, the family dog fighting to the death and being mauled. Christian Black's father grieved loudly when he found her destroyed body in the backyard.

Christian described his fighting without rules. "That was important to me. It was how I used a cruder version of the corporal methods utilized by the school official to teach the bullies to leave me and my two little brothers alone." His goal is survival for him and his family in the midst of chaos.

The H5N1 virus was a prion virus that destroyed brain cells.

Sometimes the victims of it became violent. Sometimes they just faded away before they died. Christian's family lost his twin brothers, Mason and Caden, and both his parents have it.

"I didn't say anything more as we ate. In fact, the words I'd already used were just habit. Back at the beginning, I thought continuing to talk to him might be therapeutic in some way.

Through the months, I came to realize I was talking at him rather than to him. Eventually, I stopped doing even that."

I received a complimentary Kindle copy from the author. That did not change my opinion for this review.

The Last Survivors by Bobby Adair and T.W. Piperbrook
The Last Survivors: A Dystopian Society in a Post Apocalyptic World (Volume 1) - Bobby Adair,T.W. Piperbrook

The Last Survivors, Book 1 of the Last Survivors Series by Bobby Adair and T.W. Piperbrook is a futuristic-dystopian post-apocalyptic book. I gave it four stars.

"Tales recounted by his father's soldiers around the hearths at night, stories he thought had been exaggerated to frighten a small boy, had proven true. Men were no longer men, but beasts. Beasts whose shoulders, spines and elbows grew bony fungal warts, and whose skulls grew disfigured crests." The disease was spread by wind-borne spores that could mutate a person. They stank and ate human flesh.

General Blackthorn led six hundred cavalrymen three days before and they fought with bravery against the spore-infected creatures. Now only seventy-five were left. They did not fear even though it was likely none of them would return home. His son was one of the few who did and became the new General Blackthorn.

There was a ritual Cleansing Day to check to see if any of the villagers were infected. If they had any of the signs they were forced into a funeral pyre and burned alive.

When she had met her husband Ethan, she thought she could have a good life with him. "The illusion of choice was better than having no choice at all." Now that William was 'smudged' they had to run away. Ella and William escaped the Cleansing and left Brighton.

"'I'm not sure, William. I heard Father Winthrop talk about it once at the devotional service.'

'What did he say?"

Ella laughed and thought about it. 'I honestly don't know. He's full of more meaningless words than any man I've ever met.'

They both laughed."

Ella and William were attacked by the monster demons and rescued by the Warden Bray. He then joined them on their way to Davenport.

"The dying light was like a fourth companion, keeping them on track and pushing them along."

Slow Burn: Infected, Book 2 by Bobby Adair
Slow Burn (Infected, Book 2) - Bobby Adair

Slow Burn: Infected, Book 2 by Bobby Adair is an action-filled, zombie apocaplyse thriller. It picks up where Slow Burn: Zero Day Book 1 stopped. I gave it five stars.

"Midafternoon in August is not a pleasant time to be outdoors in central Texas....Every patch of unirrigated grass gets baked to crisp hues of tan and brown. Every concrete sidewalk and stretch of bleached asphalt shimmers radiated heat."

Zed continues to learn about himself as he adapts to the circumstances of the new world. "Oft times, anger was all I had, my sole defining characteristic. It clung to me like an insecure girlfriend, and I put as little effort into sloughing it off. Perhaps I could learn from Murphy." Murphy was an optimist.

However, his laugh began to get on Zed's nerves. "'What’s up with that laugh? Did you have a favorite cartoon character or something that laughed like that?' I asked. 'No, man, that’s just my laugh. Heh, heh, heh.'"

Some of the changes that came with being infected are permanently dilated pupils and skin getting whiter. "'You know, you’re practically white now, Murphy.' 'I’m mocha frost, man.' 'Mocha frost?'"

Zed reflected on the absence of his friends. He came to terms with this by realizing: "I wouldn’t even call them friends. They’re circumstantial companions."

He also wondered about his own survival and the reason for existing. He "spent a long time staring into the insulation between my feet after that, deciding whether I was worth the effort of inhaling another breath."

I look forward to reading the next Slow Burn Book 3, Destroyer.
