Book review - Key West Dead (Jake Wolfe Book 6) by Mark Nolan
Key West Dead (Jake Wolfe Book 6) - Mark Nolan
Welcome to another adventure with Jack and Cody as they attend a wedding the newly married couple are blown up on their boat as they sail away to happiness. Obviously, this action brings our intrepid duo into yet another dangerous and exciting adventure, can they catch the mastermind behind the explosion before they cause any more financial and economical damage to the affluent Florida Keys area?

In taking on the role of investigators Jake not only puts himself in danger but his close friends and loved ones. How can he keep not only himself safe but those close to him as well? The author takes us on another exciting adventure using his knowledge and research to great effect.

You can not help feeling the pressure and sharing the emotions that Jake is feeling as you feel you are riding on Jake’s shoulder as a ghost wanting to warn and help him in his endeavors to catch the criminal who is causing mayhem. Jake’s and Cody relationship are expertly described and you can feel the total and utter trust they have in each other, as well as the fact their rely on each other to make their mission a very successful one.

As usual with Jake and Cody their mission is fraught with danger, taking twist and turns following evidence, making for a rip roaring read. Praise for the author in creating yet another excellent story line keeping the characters, both good and evil, fresh  with new environments and situations as well as giving substance and believability to the actual events which happen.

Where next for Jake and Cody? I cannot wait to find out!

The Hawley Book of the Dead
The Hawley Book of the Dead - Chrysler Szarlan

by Chrysler Szarlan

The beginning grabs you right away. Both poetic and shocking, the reader is brought into a world of a woman (Reve) and her husband who do a stage magic act, their twin daughters, and an incident with a gun that went wrong. Overshadowing it all is the unexplained scent of lilacs.

It continues as a story of a woman dealing with bereavement and police suspicion and quickly becomes a mystery when a mysterious man in a black suit stalks the widow.

From there it slows down rather a lot. There are teasing moments when a different kind of magic is hinted at and locals are reluctant to go out to Hawley five corners, but apart from depressing doom and death it's mainly a story of the widow and her daughters settling into their new home, Reve's childhood home.

I have to admit that I glazed over about a quarter of the way through, still waiting for something significant to happen. The occasional teases never seemed to bear fruit and if they eventually did, my mind had wandered and I missed it. There was a lot there that could have been a gripping story, but it just went on about day to day details of normal life for far too long and lost my interest.

Dead Beat by Jim Butcher
Dead Beat: The Dresden Files, Book 7 - James Marsters,Jim Butcher

This review can also be found at Carole's Random Life in Books.

I had a great time with my re-read of this book! I originally read this series years ago and enjoyed it so much that I decided to pick up the audiobooks to experience it all over again. I have been slowing working my way through the series for a second time often working a book into my reading schedule when I need a bit of a lift. This seemed like the perfect time for a little Harry Dresden and it proved to be a wonderful escape.

Although this was a re-read, there were a lot of things about this book that I didn't remember anymore. There were a few stand out sections of the book that I was able to recall and enjoyed being able to revisit them. This is the seventh book in The Dresden Files series which is a series that really should be read in order since the character relationships grow and change over the course of the series.

This was a pretty exciting installment in the series. Harry is put in charge of watering Karin's plants while she is on vacation and ends up working to save her reputation for a ruthless vampire. There are some powerful forces searching for a very powerful item that has the potential to do a lot of damage. Harry has to battle several necromancers and their zombies with only the help of his brother and a polka playing mortician. There were some pretty big scenes in this book and I really appreciated Harry's interactions with Sue.

James Marsters brings so much to this story. His narration is really top-notch and I found this book to be a joy to listen to. He does a fantastic job with a wide range of character voices in the series and I love how consistent he has been throughout the series. He is able to add a lot of emotion and excitement to the story through his reading. I believe that I enjoyed this book a bit more during my re-read than I did the first time largely due to his narration.

I would recommend this book to others. This is a smartly written story that is filled with wonderful characters, intense action, a bit of humor, and an interesting plot. I cannot wait to continue with my re-read of this exciting series!

Initial Thoughts
This was a re-read for me. It has been quite a few years since I first read this book and while I remember some key scenes, my memory is poor enough that it was almost like reading it for the first time. Marsters does a fantastic job with the narration and the story was really exciting. I am looking forward to tackling the next book in the series very soon.

Review ~ Decent read
The Walking Dead Book Fifteen - Robert Kirkman

Book source ~ Library

Recent events have thrown Alexandria into turmoil, and now Rick, Dwight, Eugene and Negan all have something to prove. Meanwhile, a new world order awaits...

Collects THE WALKING DEAD #169-180.

Rebuilding time. And Eugene’s radio friend gives them the go ahead to come meet her community, so Rick sends a delegation. POV changes repeatedly as we follow Alexandria, Hilltop, Negan, Jesus & Aaron, and the delegation.

Oh, yeah. There’s no way this is going to end well. I’m getting so tired of this shit. Maybe I’ll read book 16 when it comes out. We’ll see.
