Review: Inhuman
Inhuman - Kat Falls

My Rating – 3 ¼ Stars

I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley on behalf of Scholastic books in exchange for a fair review.

In the distant future, America is split at the Mississippi River. A virus has ravaged the East and a giant wall has been built to keep the rest of a country safe. This virus was created by a company called the Titan Corporation. They built amusement parks and wanted to create freaky animal hybrid creatures for their parks. Well they screwed up big time and millions of people became sick.

Delaney “Lane” Park McEvoy is a pretty normal teenage girl, living on the Western side of the wall. She has a few friends and a soft spot for stray animals. She spends her free time in self-defense classes that her father makes her take. She thinks her father is a successful art dealer that just happens to travel a lot.

Wrong.

Her father, Mac, is a fetch; which is a person that crosses the wall into the east to retrieve things people have left behind. This is a highly illegal profession, punishable by public execution. And he’s just been busted.

The director of the agency that busted Mac has a proposition for Lane. Get her father to do a special fetch to Chicago for her and she’ll erase his file. The problem is Mac crossed the wall, so Lane has to venture into the East to find him and she’s never even seen the other side of the wall before.

The director gives Lane very simple instructions. Get to the island military base where there is a doctor that may know where Mack is and get back. If she can’t find her father, get back ASAP before they block the secret passage. Oh and don’t get infected.

Lane sets off into the East, pretty much unprepared. She does however remember the fairytales her father used to tell her as a child. They seem shockingly familiar to the sites and creatures she sees in the East. She realizes her father may have been secretly training her to become a fetch.

Once in the military base she meets Everson (the good guy), a guard that actually seems to care about the people remaining in the East and Rafe (the bad guy), an outcast that steals and kills to survive and who knows her father. Both extremely attractive (of course), both want Lane.

Lane soon learns that the East is not entirely like how she was told. Lots of uninfected people were left behind when the East was evacuated and the wall was built but the government doesn’t seem to care about them. The ones that were infected have turned into animal-people hybrids.

Depending on the stage of the infection, some still have their human side and they are called “manimals”. Some have gone fully animals and they are considered feral. And sometimes ferals have no problem hunting humans.

So this book had its flaws (some big ones) but I kinda liked it. I liked Lane; her determination, and her heart of gold (even though it gets her in trouble).

Rafe and Everson were total clichés and the love triangle was really (REALLY) in your face. Like BAM. LOVE TRIANGLE. No subtleties about it. If there had been no love triangle, this easily would’ve been a 4 star book. There were also some tiny holes in the plot.

But I really liked the new spin on a dystopian world. A virus that creates animal/human creatures instead of zombies (or some other variation of the undead). It was something new and different and I did enjoy it. The action kept me going in this book. I flew through this so fast! There aren’t many slow moments.

Overall, this book was okay. The love triangle was annoying enough to make me dislike the book but the creativity and the action kinda made up for it. I’m interested enough to keep an eye out for the sequel.

Go Fetch! - Shelly Laurenston 3.5 stars I enjoyed this one same as the first. This series is surprisingly funny and the characters are always likeable. The cheesy romancey bits flowed well and felt appropriate and fun so I didn't mind.

A few pet peeves/inconsistencies/things I need to mention:

1) The hyena plot-line was never explained. At all. I get that the Epilogue alluded to the fact that that will be resolved in the 3rd book, [b:Here Kitty, Kitty!|1588709|Here Kitty, Kitty! (Magnus Pack, #3)|Shelly Laurenston|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1351325579s/1588709.jpg|1928437], Angelina said she was attacked by things that didn't quite look like dogs but it still should have been acknowledged more in this book by this books characters.

2) Miki's mom. I don't remember them saying she was a marine before. I thought the whole point was that her life was ruined when she got prego at 16. I know Miki was raised by her grandma a lot, so maybe that's because her mom went into the military. But I don't remember that, and the whole point of Miki's bitterness towards her father (and life) is that her mom's life was ruined. But it doesn't sound like it was.

3) Conall's cousins. WTF? Again, it was never explained why they showed up out of nowhere. They want him back, fine. But they show up from across the fucking globe, start shit, get their asses kicked, and leave? I thought there was going to be a connection between them and the hyenas, but it all made no sense. Yet another plot point that came out of no where to add some drama, and then disappeared. Ah well.

4) Her college friends were stupid. "Mi-Ki! Mi-Ki! Mi-Ki!" Yeah, we get it, she's freaen' awesome, get a life!

Go Fetch! - Shelly Laurenston Have I mentioned lately that I love me a good shifter story?? Well, I do, absolutely adore them actually, but a shifter story with a girl that has sarcasm and wit and who can defend herself plus add in some sheet scorching sex, I'm on that so fast, I'll make some peoples head spin, lol. This was that book!! :)

Go Fetch picks up right after the last book for a short time then jumps ahead 6 months. Miki and Conell can't get each other off their minds. To the point they are giving themselves hand jobs in their sleep. Yes, you read that right. They make each other absolutely insane. Miki hasn't been to California to see Sara once because she is avoiding Conell. But avoiding isn't an option any longer and the first day there the attraction becomes almost unbearable for both of them. Conell keeps smelling something, something he can't identify but yet has smelled before. When someone attacks Miki right outside the Pack's club and that same smell is on her, he then knows he will protect her no matter what.

Miki has to go back to Seattle for her dissertation. That's when all the fun starts. Conell follows her to protect her against her will. With all sorts of shifters coming around, hot sex on most every location of a hotel room, including one really hot pop ice scene and plenty of action this book was fantastic. Miki and her friends were the same irrestible charming selves with over the top sarcasm and plenty of hilarious dirty talk. Conell was a major alpha Viking shifter, ummm...enough said, that alone should sell you on the book. But if not, here are some funny quotes that will definitely make you want to read it, lol.

"I hate both of you."

"Now. Now. Angie and I only want you to be safe. You're not on any birth control. Sometimes people get lost in the moment. Angie did it with the best of intentions. We care about you and want you to be happy."

"F@ck her. F2ck you. And, for that matter, f@ck your intentions."

"See. Those are the tense cuss words of a woman who needs to get laid."

So freaking funny,....here's one more....

image

"You don't have any school plans tomorrow, do you?"

"No. Why?"

"Just wondering what would happen if we kept this going for the next four or five hours.

"I don't sleep, Viking. Not really. So it wouldn't matter to me." he licked her neck. Nipped her earlobe. And she kept riding him.

"You just need somebody to wear you out."

"Yeah. Good luck with that."

"The gauntlet's been laid. I accept your challenge."

"No. No. Now let's be rational about this."

"Dogs aren't rational, baby. We're dogs. We just want a job. And I just found mine..."

Don't worry, there are plenty more conversations like this to enjoy!! Just give it a try, you won't be disappointed. Definitely can't wait for more from the series....

"Just one thing. No matter where we are. No matter where we go. Or where we end up. That you always...and I mean always, Miki Kendrick...make sure our freezer has cherry ice pops."
