Gives the new doctor a side-eye look. I'm not sure how I feel about you anymore! On the other hand, this book was full of killer robots.
"Now I was traveling through a barricade of lethal robots."
"'You got a robot nanny to carry you about now? Seriously? Because of your hurty toe?'"
On the other hand, I'm 100% sure I adore Clara now. She's smart and sarcastic, and yes, please. I wasn't fond of her as a companion when she first showed up, but got a little fonder of her as time went by. But I had definite preferences that didn't include her, and I'm starting to change my mind.
I've also noticed that with the personality changes, the companions change a bit when The Doctor regenerates. To clarify, this novel may have made it clear that I like Clara with this particular Doctor. I saw the first episode of last season, then caught up on the second with robots, and the season, quite frankly, lost me. I just wasn't as interested as normal.
So, then this novel came around. It's told in first person point of view, from the perspective of a Governor of a prison. And honestly, each time I thought I knew the Governor well, or how this prison was set up, or about the story at all, it pulled the rug from under me. It reminded me of the episodes that I loved best; it had a couple twists, and the morality and ethics weren't black and white. It kept me curious and entertained, and I loved every single minute.
Especially the parts with Clara. Or the robots. The characterization was brilliant - from what little I saw of this Doctor - but especially Clara. She was very Clara-like, but I think I just like her more as her character develops more.
Here's hoping to the fact that I can read more. Maybe, but the pain has made it hard to concentrate and it's just so distracting! I'm still hoping to finish Little Brother which I'm liking more, but not nearly as much as this book later tonight.
It lacked a lot of the spirit of the characters. Clara, as always, was pretty bland like she is in the show, which is to be expected. Unfortunately, so is The Doctor. He lacked any of his typical quirks and attitude as observed with Capaldi on the show. I will say, however, that the plot was intriguing.
