All I Want for Christmas
All I Want for Christmas - Jennifer Gracen
This was a nice, sweet story. Sean and Cassie dated for a 1 1/2 years while Cassie was in college. She was 20 to his 23 (if I remember correctly). While at one of Cassie's college events, someone said something to Sean and he broke things off. Fast forward 7 1/2 years and they meet again.
This is one of those 2nd chance romances where they never fell out of love and no one ever matched the first love. Sean makes the effect to talk about his past/insecurities and I thought they were going to move forward, but then Cassie makes a similar mistake to Sean's. *Sigh* But, this time they talk it out (imagine that!). I did think the ending was rushed.
I would have liked to read about Cassie's realization of her boss's behavior as being 100% inappropriate and not "that's how things are." I expected more. Sean called it out for exactly what it was. (Go Sean!).

More Than You Know (The Harrisons) - Jennifer Gracen

Nick is a hero.   Not because he is a Detective in the police department but because he is willing to donate his marrow to a little boy that he doesn’t even know.   Well, maybe he doesn’t know them but there is a very good reason that his marrow is a match to this boy.      I love this twist.   Sure, I knew it was coming.   It wasn’t a surprise but it was perfect.  The fact that he ends up related to the boy only endears him to me even more.   With all the drama, and oh was there drama, surrounding the fact that he is a long lost Harrison he never lets it get between the real reason that he is in New York.

Then he meets Amanda.    Everything he thought he knew about love gets twisted around.    She pushes, she pulls, and she retreats in reaction to his tough, alpha exterior.    But she is perfect for him.    If only they would both open their eyes are realize it.    They both need to get over themselves and open their hearts to a love so perfect that it would be so sad to not accept it.

It Might Be You is a love story.   There is romance, there is heat, there is love but it is also a family story.   A story of finding a piece of yourself that you didn’t know was missing, a story of finding out the truth about yourself, and a story of opening your heart to love.

This is a story that is perfect with a mug of hot cocoa and cuddled under a warm blanket.

More Than You Know
More Than You Know (The Harrisons) - Jennifer Gracen
Dane is opening a new hotel. To set his hotel apart, he is looking for a lounge singer to help attract guests. Julia has her regular day job and takes gigs on the side. When Dane hears Julia, he knows she would be perfect for his hotel.
Starting out, I hated Dane. He is obnoxious, elitist, entitled, and a snob. Julia was a little better. But, I didn't like her focusing so much on her past and that was effecting her present. I got irritated with the age difference (he's 36, she's 41) being brought up over and over. Not a big fucking deal! Also with Julia's bust size. Yes, I know they are large. Just stop it, please! Say it once and then move on.
I liked Dane's family, particularly Tess. I might check out her story. Julia has a few awesome friends that are supportive of her and call her on her shit. Luckily, both get their shit together. I didn't hate Dane at the end, he was okay.

*after reading synopsis for Tess's story....probably not.

Christmas in New York series
This Christmas - Jeannie Moon
Christmas Light (Christmas in New York Book 3) - Jolyse Barnett
All I Want for Christmas - Jennifer Gracen
Goodness and Light - Patty Blount

This Christmas by Jeannie Moon ***

Ten years ago Jake broke Sabrina's heart by marrying a woman who carried his child, never knowing Sabrina was also pregnant.
It turned out, his wife's child wasn't his and they divorced, but Jake never returned...And Sabrina never told him about his daughter.

But now he's back, he's connected the dots and he wants to make amends. Will Sabrina let him?

This was a sweet little second-chances seasonal romance with a drool-worthy sweetheart of a hero, a cute little fruit of his loins that was definitely smarter than her mother, and set in a picturesque, idyllic little village.

It would've been much, much better if the heroine at the beginning wasn't a selfish and whiny bitch, and her family and friends had possessed a little more sense than just going along with whatever her reasoning for not telling a guy he was a father and then blaming the guy for not being there for the child he never knew he had.

And when she finally got over her selfishness, she was still a whiny scaredy-cat not trusting him because he abandoned her all those years ago (he thought he was doing the right thing) and not allowing him into her heart until her friends and family talked some sense into her.

It was cute and sweet, but it would've worked better with a different heroine. But then, a different heroine would've probably told the guy everything and we'd have no story.

Jade Engel is back in her hometown, just for a month, and hooks up with her childhood friend whose pre-teen heart, she'd so callously broken twenty years ago...But soon the friends-with-benefits agreement starts chafing.

Is a bitchy heroine a new norm in the contemporary romance category? Because you can be strong and independent without being bitchy. The problem was, Jade wasn't strong or independent, since everybody treated her like a doormat and she let them. She even ruined her friendship with Ben back in school because she was worried about what others thought.
So, since she was obviously unable to make decisions, let everybody dictate her life (she was thirty and still obeyed her mother!), and almost ruined her and Ben's love lives the second time around, no wonder she was bitchy.

Poor Ben for having to put up with her...And doing all the work in the end.

Seven years ago, he broke her heart and left... Now she walks into his bar just before Christmas and it just might be the best present of all.

Yet another second-chance romance that would've worked better if it wasn't a constant mope-fest. I got the gist. He left for her own good devastating them both. She was afraid of trusting him again. He was trying to make her see he's changed. I got it! There was no need for repeating the same spiel over and over and over again.
The story was short as it was, the space could've been better spent with some character presentation and development instead of constant repetition.

In the end the characters were one-dimensional husks merely going through the motions.

I liked the premise, though.

They met thirteen years ago when he gave her a crystal snowflake on the first Rememberance day. Now they meet again and he knows it's a good sign. She's not that optimistic.

This was a cute and sweet romantic story of (self)forgiveness, friendship, family and hope, yet it was completely ruined by an idiotic and extremely selfish heroine. Everything was about her, no one loved her, she was a black hole, she didn't deserve happiness...Boohoohoo.

Instead of romance we got drama, drama, drama.

What a pity.

Friday Reads - December 8, 2017
Burning Bright: Four Chanukah Love Stories - Jennifer Gracen,KK Hendin,Stacey Agdern,Megan Hart
Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race - Margot Lee Shetterly
When Dimple Met Rishi - Sandhya Menon

This weekend I am getting my Bah-Humbug self into the holiday spirit even if I need alcohol to do it. The tree is up in its place of honor (second floor landing) and lights strung; the kids just need to put the ornaments on. I'm taking the boy child out tomorrow so he can shop for the family gifts; girl child will get to do it on Monday. I am baking lots of cookies this weekend for Monday's cookie drive on base (spouses' group makes bags of homemade cookies for every Airman living in the dorms - roughly 12,000 cookies are needed).

So with what little time I have to read this weekend/upcoming week, here is what I plan to read:

1. Burning Bright: Four Chanukah Love Stories by Various Authors

Hanukkah starts on December 12th. We celebrate (kind of) on the first night.

2. Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly

For an upcoming square and for Pop Sugar. I've already seen the movie and loved it. I'm hoping some non-fiction gets me out of my DNF streak of late.

3. When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

    Impulse borrow from the library

COYER starts next weekend, so I am trying really hard not to read off my list until then. I am seriously striking out on the books for the 16 Tasks for the Festive season challenge - I just DNF'd another book tonight.
