For all fans of TPE and BDSM kinky fans.

Every now and then I read something that reminds me that M/M romance and gay erotica are seriously different genres. I dislike essentialist sounding explanations, but there are times, (most often after I've spent more than four and a half minutes watching pornography) when I just feel like shouting out: men and women are turned on by very different kinds of stories!

I enjoyed reading these stories--they are well-written and inventive--but I liked them more because they gave me a window into a world that felt truly exotic and weird than because I felt they got at the heart of my own experience. (The only chapter I can say that about was David Stein’s smart and incisive Editor's Note, “Value-Added Porn,” on the difference between porn and erotica, which I plan on quoting in some blog post if I ever get my act together.)

For me, the world of the stories was interesting but not appealing. It wasn't just the dog bowls and the piss play. I found the mentality of the slaves impossible to identify with.

"I felt full and complete being used by this totally hot stud, used like the dog slave I am, used to bring him pleasure."

"Worshipping men like him and my Master is why I was born."

“My pain or pleasure wasn’t important. All that mattered was serving him.”

That level of abjection and selflessness is just too much for me. I find it alienating. However, I think my distaste is exactly that, a matter of taste: I don’t usually like most “Club” novels that purport to depict people in the BDSM lifestyle. Any story in which characters eagerly adopt an established role leaves out most of the inner conflict and ambivalence that is the most erotically charged part of D/s for me. (As slave fics go, I find Yaelen’s inner torments over his attraction to his master? lover? rapist? both fascinating and intensely erotic, though in other ways Bloodraven is far too brutally sadistic for my taste).

The genre of Winner Takes All: Master/Slave Fantasies by Christopher Pierce doesn’t help matters. With a few notable exceptions, the book offers erotic teases, ficlets, which are little more than a hot scenario or exchange in a fantasy version of gay slave life. Some stories are better than others--hotter than others--but there was not enough characterization or complexity for them to truly be erotic for me. Every character in this collection is essentially interchangeable and virtually all of them wholeheartedly embrace their situation. And that I think is the key difference. It's not enough that a book describes a kinky scenario; unless I feel involved with the characters, and to some extent challenged by what they are experiencing, then it's not very different than watching porn or looking at explicit photos, neither of which I find particularly arousing.

There were a few exceptions: I really admired "The Executioner's Boy.” It was imaginative and moody and dark. It also surprised me: usually I can't tolerate any erotic fiction that includes serious threats of death as part of the domination, but this one made that work. The title story, the last in the collection, was the longest and the most developed, with a strong story arc and compelling character development, though the narrator’s personality or mentality didn’t differ noticeably from that of the slaves in the other stories.

As I said above, I was very interested reading this. In some instances, you can learn more about yourself—your imagination and your desires--from well-written fictions that don’t quite work for you than from ones that fit your kinks dead-on. I suspect that M/M romance will always have a somewhat uneasy relationship with gay erotica and speaking from the M/M camp, I think it’s worthwhile to be both aware and respectful of how these genres—and their authors and audiences--differ. There’s no question that these stories are arousing for the right audience, and echoing editor David Stein, I am firmly of the opinion that such fiction has value—drastically underrated value. I admire Pierce for his achievement, even when I can’t totally experience it as it was intended.

Expertly turning him into true boymeat, whimpering and begging to be fucked. The boy moans so sweetly and so eagerly it's like music to my ears.

I would give this story a 10 stars if I could. It's one of the hottest story in this sexy anthology.

This is another story I am happy to give 10 shiny stars. You need dark and gritty in your erotica to enhance your sexual excitement? This is it. This is the story for you. It would drown you in pleasure of total domination over a man and also offer sexual ignition of full submission. The epic twisted love in this one makes me tingle all over. Stockholm was out to play....

The premise of the story was quite interesting and original. The world building was steady and debaucheries of all kinds was found within that mysterious island. Yet I only find this story to be satisfactory but not wow although it does have the most elaborated setup compared with the rest of the stories in this anthology.

I got all the right sorts of vibes from this story. Large dominating males towering over their subs. There is so much testosterone in this story alone I could almost smell it in the air. It's like breathing in sexy manly pheromones. Yup this was yet another story with lots of erotic manhandling. 

I am glad Slaveboy Josh met Master Max. He brought out the best in Josh. He might be highly dominating and rough but he does have a tender side which I liked very much. In short, Slaveboy Josh had experienced the most intense sessions with Master Max over the weekend. It was painful and harrowing but it was also exhilarating, mind-altering and filled Josh with much joy for Josh. Lastly, I agree with other reviewers that...

Master Bill was too blind and idiotic to recognize such a slaveboy gem like Josh who is always ready to serve and submit without a complaint. I was kinda expecting or wishing Master Max would sock him a good one when he dumped Josh like trash in public. Too bad I have to do that in my mind since Master Max didn't react the way I wanted. OVERVIEW
The writing has a pronounced masculinity which I found compelling as it highlights virility and that is sexy to me. I am also delighted to learn that there are so many different terms to refer to the male sexual organ other than just cock or penis. I have also learned that different ways of calling a penis evokes different feelings. Words usage are important and it is powerful when used right. Tube-steak and cum sack makes me go wild with desire. So yea the writing is strong and honed to please.

Winner Takes All is erotica done right. It delivers what it promised; it helps its reader to get off. That is what we are looking for in our erotica right? Not only was it well written, it held true power to ignite our sexual desire hence I call this quality erotica.

This anthology is heavy on TPE, domination and submission, sweet sexual torments like orgasm denial, delicious bondage of various kinds, lots of humiliation and degradation, watersports and some corporal punishments. There are a couple of scenes which might freak out some vanilla readers. Otherwise all else is aim to please readers who enjoys serious BDSM that leans more towards the hardcore side.

I have enjoyed this book immensely and had a tough time suppressing my urge to highlight the whole book. If you are those who enjoys getting into the minds of a real dom or sub, this book is definitely for you as it portrays them perfectly. You would find yourself swept away into the minds of the narrators experiencing their realities where every flicker of their emotions are closely felt by you. This book was written with passion and the desire to bring Master/Slave fantasies to life. 

One more thing, please try not to skip the Editor's Note or the Foreword. Both was brilliantly written and you would gain insights on what this anthology is about and what it aims to achieve apart from other tidbits.

3 Stars for the effort and for being a good diversion to pass the time.

A sweet and caloric slavefic fairytale. Enjoyable at first bite, unfortunately it only makes you hunger for something more sustainable than a sugar fix. (See this? I could write short reviews too)

1. Do you have a favorite character? Why?

 

Maybe Demetrie. His way of enjoying Sev's body excites me. Just like Sev, I am taken with Demetrie's commanding air and finding him hard to resist. That's something rare for me as I usually see myself from the perspective of the dom rather than the sub.

 

 

 

I wished I could like the protagonist better but to me, Sev is not a well developed character. For someone who has known joy of family even only an adoptive one and used to having his own freedom, Sev does seem to give up on his identity and self worth quite easily. Many times he feels much like a puppet without free will and lacks sense of self preservation. This was observed even at the early stage of Demetrie's ownership of him. He does not even question internally on Demetrie's demanding request of him. He is too naive and trusting to be a street smart boy with a nomadic tribe upbringing. This doll like quality of his is rather disturbing.

 

 

 

 

 

2. Does a particular scene stick in your mind? Or a quote? What resonated with you?

 

I like Demetrie's blindfold punishment for Sev. Very interesting way of training trust. Just like one would apply to an animal like a horse. I just read one femdom story on human pony training that applies such technique too. Fascinating. >:D

 

 

 

 

 

3. Homogeneity is important to Athena. What was your reaction?

 

A place that lacks originality and individuality. No wonder Demetrie is so bored of his life there. In real life homogeneity is also known as racism ;)

 

 

 

In the olden days, aristocrats tends to put very high standards on pure blood marriages. This might also still be true till this age and time.

 

 

 

 

 

4. This is a highly stratified society with roles strictly delineated. Do you think our society is similar? Maybe we don't acknowledge it, but it exists?

 

Yes it does exist in our real world. Look around you. The poor is still dirt poor and the rich is still filthy rich. Who will have the more power? Money makes the political world goes round. What would that means to the lower income class? We feel such oppression daily.

 

 

 

Athena seems to be a place that discourages change in order to maintain firm control over its citizen and resources. Those who refused to conform would be ousted like Demetrie as a safeguard to its system.

 

 

 

This unfortunately leads me to question the plotline whereby Demetrie gave his title and name to Sev when he decided to leave Athena as an outcast. I mean how could this possibly be done when Demetrie himself is to be stripped off his title even to the extend that his assets will be seized just because he wouldn't fulfill his obligation as an aristocrat? There is simply no reason whatsoever for Athena or its aristocratic members to honor Demetrie's transfer of his title and name to Sev a mere dreg with zero rights or even simple recognition as a human being? To me, this plotline is OTT and does not conform with the oppressive and autocratic universe created by the author.

 

 

 

 

 

5. What did you think of Demetrie's plan?

 

Childish and fanciful, borderline idiotic. It shouldn't even be successful or plausible if the plots were tight enough and if the characters are well built. Yes I am saying it IS unrealistic. It is contradictory to the strict caste system of Athena. Think politically... would Demetrie's rebellious, traitorous way of escaping the system be ignored by his autocratic government? Wouldn't it be wiser for them to curb it at its stem before it becomes a precedent?

 

 

 

This quote sums up Athena for us:

 

Michael nodded. “I heard that Athena cleared out another section of her ghetto last night. What are they calling it these days? Oh yes, ‘progressive beautification’.” He shook his head slowly. Soon there would be no ghettos; the dregs would be buried under swimming pools, shopping centers, and aristolitical complexes. The sign of a thriving society was its lack of a lower caste, and since raising dregs up economically, socially, and politically would create a strain on the wealthy, it made far more sense to eliminate the problem more permanently by eliminating those who suffered it.

 

 

 

 

 

6. Do you think the author's story answered the member's photo and prompt?

 

Firstly, I am excited a photo of the bookcover from one of my favorite M/M Psychological Thriller graphic novel was used In These Words by Kichiku Neko & TogaQ. TogaQ's art is to die-for. And Kichiku Neko writes awesome psychological thrillers of the erotic kind.

 

 

 

Okay back to the prompt. I think it was answered quite well. The author even incorporated the limberness of the slave in the picture into the story and the cards strewed across the floor was also applied to the story. I dig the sex scenes too. It was sensual and erotic.

 

 

 

 

 

7. Do you wish something different was done or incorporated into the story?

 

Not really. The author tried her best to deliver according to the prompt and she has succeeded in that goal alone. I hope that by reading the honest reviews of her readers, she would be able to improve her writings further, especially in terms of character development and making tighter plotlines. I could see that she has lots of potential to excel. All she needs was more experience and constructive feedbacks.

Tess Snow was excited to go on holiday with her kind, caring boyfriend Brax. So what if his gentle lovemaking didn’t do it for her. So what if her parent’s lack of affection gave her the need to be dominated, claimed. So what if he rejects her play at rougher sex.

 

I wanted a new label. One that said: girlfriend who will do anything to be tied, spanked, and fucked all over rather than adored.

 

I reminded myself for the three-hundredth time, that the sweet, wonderful relationship I had with this man was far more important than a bit of sexy play in the bedroom.

 

Content to remain in a relationship where  her needs aren’t being fulfilled, she and Brax begin their vacation sight-seeing. After a long day of travel, they stop at a run-down cafe for a much needed drink. Tess’s instincts immediately tell her that the place isn’t safe, but Brax brushes off her concerns. When he leaves to go to the bathroom, her instincts are confirmed. She was taken.

 

For the next week she is kept in an undisclosed place with a dozen other women in similar condition. The only difference is, Tess doesn’t bow to their demands. She fights. Even when they implant a tracking device and tattoo a barcode on her wrist.

 

I was no longer Tess. I was dollar signs.

 

At the end of the week she’s taken by one of the men and put on a plane where she meets her new master. A french man named who tells her to call him Q.

 

“What will you do with me? My voice was barely a whisper.

“That is none of your concern.”

“You don’t think my future is any of my concern?”

“No. Because your future is mine.”

 

Throughout her time as Q’s esclave she is puzzled by her enigmatic master. He seems to struggle to control his urge to dominate her, alternating between frustration and lust. His mysterious tattoos, demeanor, and past don’t add up. The more time that Tess spends with him, fighting her own desires to be dominated, the more she wants to understand him.

 

Who is Q and what does he want with her?

 

 

Tears of Tess was not at all what I was expecting. If you’ve read stories such as The Dark Duet and Comfort Food you’ll have an idea as to the idea of a captor/slave story that I was expecting. This, however, was nothing like those.

 

Tess fought Q almost every step of the way. She was determined not to break, to be strong. In fact, her fire and spirit is one of the things that Q most enjoyed about her. What was most interesting was Q’s response to Tess’s desire to be dominated. It wasn’t just Tess that fought. Q had his own personal demons and it was absolutely riveting trying to understand what motivated him.

 

Their dynamic was absolutely unique. In other captor/slave stories there is a definite delineation between master and slave because the master wants to be the way he is. In Tears of Tess Q’s past experiences make him fight his urges. As they grew to know one another, they needed each other.

 

It wasn’t an easy journey, as both Tess and Q have things to hide. But I really enjoyed the way Pepper crafted the story.

 

I loved Tess. Circumstances in her past have made her into a woman with specific needs. Her desire to be dominate comes from a past where people abandoned her. She has an innate need to be claimed. To feel wanted. Her relationship with Brax didn’t satisfy those needs, but somehow her twisted relationship with Q does.

 

In that moment, in my fragile and broken state, my feelings for Q changed. He did what Brax hadn’t done in Mexico: he found me, killed for me. He rescued me from horror and protected me from the bastards who hurt.

 

I’m not going to go into much more detail about their relationship because it is truly what sets this book apart and it was so interesting to watch unfold. Suffice it to say that their connection is what made the book great for me.

 

Aside from a few awkward word choices and a plot thread or two that I would have liked explained, I have no real complaints. A lot of my questions about her behavior and reactions to Q and his to her, were explained by the end of the book. The last chapter and epilogue had me holding my breath in excitement.

 

It is a standalone, but the ending definitely leaves it open for a second book. *wink*
