The Woman in the Lake - Nicola Cornick

The story of a couple of women hundreds of years apart and a strange yellow gown binding them together. Naturally there’s a few cads and a hero! Set in Swindon and environs which turned out to be a surprising place and far more interesting than I would’ve imagined. Glimpses into the Georgian lifestyle when it’s Lady Isabella’s turn to give her point of view plus every now and again, her maid, Constance gets to say her piece. I preferred them to Fen (Fenella) who I didn’t find very appealing which isn’t to say the other two women were perfect. This is the sort of book to while away a few hours either on a winter’s eve or basking on a beach.

The Woman in the Lake
The Woman in the Lake - Nicola Cornick
Snakes and Ladders roll #2- Published in 2019

In London, 1765 the philandering and abusive Lord Gerard becomes so enraged at his wife, Lady Isabella that he commissions a beautiful gold gown meant to kill her.  When his plan fails, Lord Gerard enlists his Moonraker pal and Lady Isabella's maid, Constance to destroy the dress.  However, both Lady Isabella and Constance become so enraptured with the dress that the task is never completed.  Lady Isabella decides to escape the city and convalesce in Lydiard, away from her husband.  The dress calls to her though, possessing Lady Isabella.  In 2004, Fenella Brightwell takes a school trip to Lydiard.  Fen has kleptomania tendencies and when she walks into a small room at Lydiard, she sees a drunken man in time period clothing staring at a golden dress.  Fen is spooked, but before she goes the golden dress calls out to her- take me.  Years later, Fen is out of an abusive relationship and has created a stable life for herself.  Then, she gets a package in the mail. The golden dress has made its way back to her life with a strange message- danger.

The Woman in the Lake is an enchanting dual-time mystery that pulled me into the story just as the dress made its way into the character's lives.  From the beginning I was engrossed with the puzzle of who the woman in the lake was and the importance of the dress.  The narrative switched between Isabella, Constance and Fen's point of view tying together their experiences with the pull of the golden dress.  While the dress enhanced the worst traits in all of the woman, the dress also seemed to make it possible for the women to rid themselves of an even bigger problem, the men in the lives.  As Fen investigated the history of the dress, the similarities between herself and Isabella became apparent with a love of art and a knack for falling for abusive men.  Constance was a very interesting character to me as it was not apparent as to where her loyalties lied, however, she was definitely the most clever.  The golden dress was a character in itself; as I read about the qualities of the dress, I felt possessed myself as I felt the need to continue to read in order to unravel its mystery. I would have loved to know how exactly the power was created.  Overall, a captivating story mixing history, mystery and a touch of magic.

The Phantom Tree
The Phantom Tree - Nicola Cornick

In present day Wiltshire, England Alison Bannister sees a portrait that catches her eye.  The portrait has been recently authenticated to be of Anne Boleyn, however Alison knows better.  It is of her friend, Mary Seymour and the portrait contains precious clues that Mary left for Alison in order to find her son.  Mary and Alison grew up together, castoffs of Wolf Hall under the care of their cousin Edward.  After becoming pregnant and being forced to give up her child, Alison runs away with plans to set up a home and bring Arthur there.  Though, the place Alison has found is a portal into the future and for 10 years she has not been able to find out how to return to her own time.

Exciting and engaging with strokes of magic and fantasy, Nicola Cornick's The Phantom Tree reimagines the little known life of Katherine Parr's daughter, Mary Seymour and gives her an enchanted but tragic life with a time-traveling best friend.  From the time Alison sees Mary's portrait, I was hooked on the mystery surrounding her life.  The point of view shifts back and forth between Alison and Mary's life in the 16th century and Alison's life in the present.  I was amazed at how well Alison was able to adapt as well as intrigued by the series of clues left for her by Mary.  Alison and Mary's characters are painted as opposites, Alison is wild, resourceful and cunning, Mary is careful and quiet in order to keep the secret that she sees visions of the future.  Between the the women, there is a full picture of what life was like for a woman in the 16th century who did not have a male figure to provide for them.  The writing easily transported me to both centuries and I could envision Wolf Hall and Middlecote as well as Alison's modern flat and the portrait of Mary.  Historical fiction rolled up with fantasy, romance and time travel provides for a well-rounded, fast-paced entrancing read.  I'll definitely be looking for more from this author.

Historical Christmas Romance
The Heart of Christmas (A Handful of Gold, The Season for Suitors, This Wicked Gift) - Mary Balogh,Nicola Cornick,Courtney Milan

The Heart of Christmas is a trio of holiday books by three different authors.

A Handful Of Gold by Mary Balogh is a fast paced read.  Ms Balogh has gifted us with a story that embraces the holiday season.  Julian and Blanche's story is full of drama, humor, spice and Christmas spirit.  The characters in this story are phenomenal.

The Season For Suitors by Nicola Cornick is another story that celebrates the holiday season.  Sebastian and Clara's story is a fun story full of drama, humor and hard-headed, stubborn hero.

This Wicked Gift by Courtney Milan is Lavinia and William's Christmas tale.  Ms Milan has penned a story full of drama.  There are bits of humor hidden away and some spice is always a good thing.

All three of these books are well-written and populated by amazing characters.  I enjoyed all three stories and look forward to reading more from Mary Balogh, Nicola Cornick and Courtney Milan soon.
