Her Colorado Sheriff
Her Colorado Sheriff - Patricia Thayer Her Colorado Sheriff - Patricia Thayer 3.75 stars

After Shelby's sister is murdered by her ex, a cop, she flees Kentucky with her nephew, Ryan. She discovers that the job she was expecting to have is no more, and that the housing that came with the job is also gone. Instead, ends up in the house Cullen just inherited. Thankfully, he's a reasonable guy and offers to rent the cottage out back to Shelby. With his help, she also lands a job in town. But can she trust him? Cullen is the temporary sheriff in a small Colorado town, and Shelby is terrified that her sister's murderer will track her down.

This is a feel good romance. Everyone is nice and pleasant, and other than the crooked cop trying to track her down, the townspeople are welcoming of her and Ryan. Shelby is reluctant to clue Cullen in about her past because she's distrustful of the law, and she's afraid to get involved with the handsome sheriff in case she has to flee town suddenly.

Cullen is a bit gun shy, too. He was accused of being a crooked cop in Denver, and after fighting the charges for a year, was exonerated. His father, also a cop, didn't support him, so he left to take a temporary job as the sheriff of a small town while the original sheriff recovers from an illness. He, too, is reluctant to get involved with Shelby and Ryan, because he doesn't know what he's going to do after his temporary contract is up.

I enjoyed this book. The characters just want what's best for their families, the secondary characters are all likeable, and there is even a small herd of horses that Cullen gets stuck taking care of. At times the romance felt stagnant, but I liked the protagonists enough that that was only a minor quibble.

Second Chance Rancher
Second Chance Rancher - Patricia Thayer Second Chance Rancher - Patricia Thayer 3 stars

I was engaged while reading Second Chance Rancher, but now, just two days later, I'm having a hard time remembering all of the details. Addy, hero's little girl, charmed and irritated in equal measure.

I think I would have held more a grudge against the guy who dumped me for the big city, but since Kase and Laurel were just teens at the time, I guess I have to cut him some slack. The second chance at love trope is one of my favorites, and that's probably the major reason I enjoyed this story. It's only in retrospect, as I struggle to write this review, that I realize nothing really stuck in my memory. So, if you have a few hours to burn, you could do worse than picking up this book. Just don't expect anything memorable.

Count on a Cowboy
Count on a Cowboy - Patricia Thayer Count on a Cowboy - Patricia Thayer 3.5 stars

When I was reading this, I didn't think it was working for me, but I got a little teary eyed at the end, so I guess I had a deeper connection with the story than I realized. I did enjoy the horsey elements and the time Trent and Brooke spent together while everyone was out of town chasing a no good embezzling ex. I wasn't thrilled with the reception Brooke received when her father finally came back to town. Her sister accepted her right away, but her father and his wife blamed her for the sins of her mother, which made me very angry. If you're going to place blame, Rory was a prime candidate for that! He's the one who cheated on his girlfriend during a wild weekend in the first place. Instead, you're going to blame the poor kid you conceived. Just great. Grrrr.
