Ruby Red
Ruby Red (The Ruby Red Trilogy) - Kerstin Gier

Overall I liked this book, which is good because for some reason I decided to already buy the rest of the books when they were discounted sometime earlier.

The book opens with a mysterious pair who have landed in 1912 London. We don't know much about them other than they time traveled from a later date when jogging and Kleenex were normal parts of everyday life. Their words don't make a lot of sense until later in the book, but basically you could figure out that they were stuck there and had stolen some device from other people and had been helped by a woman named Grace.

The book then jumps to contemporary times, I think 2010ish, though it isn't said specifically. Gwyneth is a member of a family who has a time traveling gene. She doesn't know too much about it other than when certain member of her family is between 16 and 17, she will gain the ability to travel in time. Her 16-year-old cousin Charlotte is apparently going to be the next traveler and her family has been almost obsessed with waiting for her ability to manifest. Gwyneth, also 16, finds it all a bit weird and exciting.

Until, she starts getting the headaches which usually portend time travel and is whisked away in time. Unlike Charlotte, Gwyneth has no training and no idea what to expect.

From there she's introduced into a secret society, which was founded by the Count of St. Germain, another time traveler. He figured out what was happening and how to control it, as well as tracking down two family lines, one which passes the gene to male heirs and one to female heirs. Gwyneth is apparently the "Ruby" the last of the 12 time travelers and will have "powers of the raven".

I did figure out the truth of why her birthdate was lied about prior to the reveal in the end and have guessed about a few other storylines, but we'll see if I'm right. I did have some issues with the book but I do think it has at least started off as one of the better paranormal YA series and I look forward to reading the rest.

Storm's Heart
Storm's Heart - Thea Harrison

Finally continuing on the Elder Races series. I read the first one about two years ago randomly and I remember being convinced at the time that Rune would be the focus of the next one, until I read the preview and saw that it was Tiago and Tricks. On my second read through last month, it was obvious to me.

Overall, I liked the book, but not as much as Dragon Bound. I did like the couple and they were fun to read about. I liked seeing the different Elder Races interact and learning more about them. I do expect to see more from Tiago and Tricks in the future, since while there was a basic HEA, it was clear that they will have to make a lot of decisions in the future.

I did figure out, well at least seriously suspect, the person who was trying to kill Tricks. I thought it was drawn out enough that I wasn't 100%.

I will continue on with this series. When would depend on what the next shelf call is for SOS Bingo!

Ghost in the Polka Dot Bikini
Ghost in the Polka Dot Bikini - Sue Ann Jaffarian

I picked up Ghost a la Mode a few years ago when I kept buying cheap kindle books. I at least don't do it as much now :)

This was one of the gems among all the books I picked up because they could be interesting. Emma Whitecastle learned about her paranormal ability to see and communicate with ghosts in the first book. She met her great-great-great-greatgrandmother and with her help, solved a family mystery.

Now Emma is comfortable in her ability and even hosts a paranormal show. While on vacation with her new boyfriend, she sees the ghost of a young woman who apparently doesn't even know she's dead. While researching the woman, she learns she was a 60s aspiring actress with a connection to Emma's former in-laws.

The book is a fun mystery with some good twists and mysteries. I will definitely pick up the next one and apparently there's also a fourth and a short story featuring her daughter.

Lover Reborn
Lover Reborn: A Novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood - J.R. Ward

Almost caught up with this series, and I was was lucky that yellow/orange cover got called for the SOS Book Shelf Bingo :)

I'm still liking this series and this has made the top half for my overall ranking (which can be seen after the jump).

One thing I did like about this book was that there was a definite passage of time and it takes place over about a year, as opposed to the other books which seem to cover maybe a week or two at a time. Although, now that I mention time, I did have a question if anyone knows the answer. Tohr says at one point that Wellsie died 15 months ago. But she died around the time that Nalla was conceived, and vampire pregnancies take 18 months and Nalla's been since book six. Is there a BDB timeline anyone knows of?

I can see that the story is also starting to move away from the Lessers and going to more infighting with vampires, particularly with the Brotherhood of Bastards who showed up in the last book, but didn't really do much.

The couple for this book was Tohrment and No'One/Autumn. Her original name was mentioned once, but I unfortunately don't remember it. This was an interesting pairing since when the series started Tohr was happily mated to Wellsie, but she was killed by lessers in the third book, and then he took off, not to be seen again till the sixth book I think?

When he did show up, it was because an angel, Lassiter, brought him back. It wasn't till this book that we found out why. For Lassiter to be gain salvation, he has to help Tohr free Wellsie and their unborn son from basically purgatory where they've been stuck since Tohr won't let go of them.

Tohr does start up a relationship with Autumn, but holds on to his baggage for dear life. One of the other main storylines was the chasm between John and Xhex after he forbids her to fight, well she isn't too happy about that. He also is pretty uncomfortable with Tohr moving on since he also misses Wellsie. Luckily both of the guys do work through their issues.

There was a fair amount of angst in this book, but some fun moments as well. I enjoyed the ones with Lassiter most, particularly when he makes Tohr watch romantic comedies. I think he's sticking around and I hope to see more of him.

(spoiler show)
