Review: Love and Other Unknown Variables
Love and Other Unknown Variables - Shannon Alexander

It is a rare occasion that a book makes me laugh and cry at the same time. I really loved Charlotte's quick wit and charming sarcasm, combined with Charlie's social ineptitude it made for a winning combination.

The story is written from Charlie's point of view which gives it a really great perspective. As intelligent as he is, Charlie has a lot to learn about life, social skills and of course love. One of my favorite quotes from the book is “Please don't confuse love and logic Charlie. They aren't even remotely related. “ I really enjoyed reading about Charlie's fumbling journey into realizing not everything in life can be broken down into an equation.

In addition to enjoying the budding friendship of Charlotte and Charlie, their friends and family really make this a well rounded story. Charlie's two best friends and sister are easy to relate to and aren't afraid to tell him when he's being awful. This story would not have been as strong without them.

Charlotte's sister is the idealist we all want to be. She challenges a group of high school kids to "bring it" on the very first day of class and the pranks that ensue brought a delightful chuckle in this sometimes serious story. Most of all I enjoyed that she wasn't perfect and was able to be vulnerable without being weak. That seems to be a rare talent for female characters.

I would highly recommend you pick up this well written story, but be prepared for a few tears along the way. As with life, we can't always chose our own endings.

Life After Juliet by Shannon Lee Alexander
Life After Juliet - Shannon Lee Alexander

I must admit that I've never read Love and Other Unknown Variables, despite much love being heaped upon it by many a reader that I trust. When Life After Juliet was offered to me for review, and I realized that Shannon Lee Alexander had written this as a companion novel, I couldn't wait to dive in! I figured it would be a great way to get to know these characters, and to see if I'd be interested in learning more about Charlotte. The outcome? Someone get me Alexander's other book, stat. I'm hooked, and I don't care who knows it.

One of the things that I love most about Contemporary novels is that the characters have to deal with real world problems. I feel like it makes it that much easier to sink into their lives as I'm reading. In the case of Becca, I fell hard for her character the moment I met her. Watching her hide behind her books, favoring the people and places in books instead of the outside world, I totally understood where she was coming from. In books, people are always there. You can flip a few pages back, and make everything better again. You can skip the sad endings. In life, that's unfortunately not the case. Becca's anxiety over losing what's left of her best friend, her unwillingness to deal with the unknown, I felt it all and it broke me.

What's beautiful about Life After Juliet though is the message. Becca learns, through a ton of lessons she'd never expected to face, that moving forward is the only thing you can do. Sure, she stumbles a lot. She wavers. She even tries to give up. Except she doesn't, and her growth is just a wonderful thing. I laughed with her. Cried with her. Felt my heart rip out of my chest when she confessed to being afraid to let anyone else in. By far, my favorite part of this whole book though was her relationship with Max. No spoilers here, but this was the most honest relationship I've seen in a book in a long time. Be still, my heart.

I don't hand out five star ratings easily, but Life After Juliet can't be rated any other way. This book was gorgeous! It was raw, gritty, and the perfect glimpse into the life of someone who is just trying to make the pieces fit together after a big part of them was ripped away. I can't wait to get a copy of Alexander's first book, and meet Charlotte. With how much Becca loves her, I know that I will too.

Well, June is done. Today is my birthday, which means it's the first day of July! Huzzah! This has always been my favorite month. Birthday celebrations, fireworks, big barbeques, and long, warm evenings. I'm so very ready for all of that.

Spongebob here sums up how I feel about my June reading. With the exception of one book, which I feel will likely languish for a long while since it's SO slow, I finished my June TBR. Woohoo!

As you can see above, I took on a lot of review books for July. That's not even all of them, just the ones I'm most looking forward to :). *wipes brow* I have a good feeling though. Let's hope some of these are gems!

Love and Other Unknown Variables

by Shannon Lee Alexander

Charlie Hanson has a clear vision of his future. A senior at Brighton School of Mathematics and Science, he knows he'll graduate, go to MIT, and inevitably discover the solutions to the universe's greatest unanswerable problems. But for Charlotte Finch, the future has never seemed very kind. Charlie's future blurs the moment he meets Charlotte, but by the time he learns Charlotte is ill, her gravitational pull on him is too great to overcome. Soon he must choose between the familiar formulas he's always relied on or the girl he's falling for.

Mathematical Geekiness, Love, Cancer: How Can You Lose?
Love and Other Unknown Variables - Shannon Alexander

10/29/14 ** DO NOT start this book - if you don't have time to finish it. One of the hardest things I did over the weekend was put the book down to finish a paper for grad school. It is the best book I've read this year, and I cannot speak highly enough of this moving YA debut novel by Shannon L Alexander.

Though it's being described as a "read alike" for The Fault in Our Stars" (and it is), this book should be read on its own merit. The protagonist, Charlie, has his life plotted out - valedictorian, MIT... He knows he hasn't been able to figure out girls in the past, and he figures he won't be able to now. He meets Charlotte, a girl with the symbol for infinity tattooed on her neck - a girl with links to math? He falls hard, then finds out Charlotte has a secret.

In addition to having a mathematically-voiced protagonist I believed, emotion I felt, and characters I REALLY cared about, I appreciated allusions to other literature throughout the book - Harry Potter in snippets and many references to To Kill a Mockingbird. I was also astounded by the lengths to which the English teacher at Charlie's school went went to entice the math and science majors to connect with poetry (who knew there were so many mathematical references in poems?!)

I sincerely hope to see this book on the tables in front of the Printz and Morris selection committees.
