Review: Slayer (Slayer #1) by Kiersten White
Slayer - Kiersten White

Into every generation a Slayer is born…

Nina and her twin sister, Artemis, are far from normal. It’s hard to be when you grow up at the Watcher’s Academy, which is a bit different from your average boarding school. Here teens are trained as guides for Slayers—girls gifted with supernatural strength to fight the forces of darkness. But while Nina’s mother is a prominent member of the Watcher’s Council, Nina has never embraced the violent Watcher lifestyle. Instead she follows her instincts to heal, carving out a place for herself as the school medic.

Until the day Nina’s life changes forever.

Thanks to Buffy, the famous (and infamous) Slayer that Nina’s father died protecting, Nina is not only the newest Chosen One—she’s the last Slayer, ever. Period.

As Nina hones her skills with her Watcher-in-training, Leo, there’s plenty to keep her occupied: a monster fighting ring, a demon who eats happiness, a shadowy figure that keeps popping up in Nina’s dreams…

But it’s not until bodies start turning up that Nina’s new powers will truly be tested—because someone she loves might be next.

One thing is clear: Being Chosen is easy. Making choices is hard.

*I received a free copy from the publisher and chose to leave a voluntary review. Thank you!*

As a big Buffy fan I was super excited to be able to read this ARC. And having it finished, I must say that it is a must read for any Buffy fan out there.

Even people not knowing about Buffy will enjoy this book, it gives you enough background to know what is going on.

This book throws you right back into the Buffy Universe and starts off a few months where Buffy ended.

We meet Nina, who is a future watcher or should be, but after the events in Buffy those are slim and everything changed.

It is clear early on that Nina is a not a fan of Buffy and dislikes anything and everything about her. While we never really “meet” Buffy in person we hear plenty of her from Nina.

Nina is a super complex who has too many things against her without being the choses one, But once it is clear that she also is a Slayer, and not just any Slayer but the last Slayer. things get even harder for her.

After her father’s death things are complicated between her and her mom and its only getting worse.  The only one she can rely on is her twin sister…… but nothing is ever so easy.

It is clear, early on that everyone is keeping secrets from each other but soon things starting to unravel and it is only a matter of time before everything and everyone will be exposed.

Of course Nina is right in the middle of everything and must deal with it. But she soon doesn’t know who to trust. To make matters worse she must accept that she might be becoming the very thing she hates… a Slayer .

I really enjoyed this book. The book started out at a slower pace and is a bit of a slow burn but well worth it. The last 25% are just jam-packed with action and plot twists you didn’t see coming. The whole book is fun and has some pretty funny moments, it had a bit of a Vampire Academy feeling to it as well.

The end had me super excited for the next book. I can’t wait to see what is in store and how it all will work out.

I rate it 4 ★ but just because it was a bit on the slower side in the beginning.

Long Reign Buffy !?!
Buffy The Vampire Slayer: New School Nightmare - Carolyn Nowak
A good starting point for anyone who has not seen or read the previous Buffy The Vampire Slayer seasons. This would technically be a reboot or alternate history. Buffy Summers is starting a new middle school in Cleveland and finds out she is a vampire slayer. It’s hard to be a teen let alone a slayer but with her new female watcher and two best friends, a witch and a werewolf, she is not alone.

Buffy and the slayer mythology is about the only thing familiar with this graphic novel if you are a fan of the past Buffy The Vampire Slayer.  Now, I do not know if this is going to match the reboot that will be taking place on tv. I think probably not since the book has the blonde haired and white Buffy because it is rumored that the new tv series Buffy will be African American. ]

The art is quaint and there is nothing too racy for young kids. Since there are new characters interacting with Buffy it is all new to me, which did make it hard to put down and fun to read.

The story is cute and action-packed but as a Buffy fan, I did miss Willow, Xander, and Giles from the original group. I think is great that Buffy is coming back in some way, I just wish it a continuation or a new slayer rather than use Buffy again.

As Buffy The Vampire Slayer is a creation of Joss Whedon, I will probably support this version of Buffy and any others. So “Long Live Buffy!”... I guess.
