Today we took a day trip into the N.C. mountains, which is just over the border from us, about 45 minutes away, to Flat Rock.  (We also crept into Hendersonville, right next door, for one stop.)

 

On the way up to Flat Rock, we bought apples.  And apple butter.  And apple cider.  And sugar-free peach jam.  All from Sky Top Orchard - it was in the 40s and windy, on a mountain top, but very sunny, and they had lots of cool stuff.  As well as apples and preserves, they had pumpkins and other produce, and some baked goods.)

 

In Flat Rock itself, we stopped in at the Wrinkled Egg, which sells everything from clothes to toys, and greeting cards to everything for the teenaged horse-obsessed girl.  We also visited the jewelry store next door, Sweet Magnolia, which had some cool stuff.

 

Then we were off to Yarns to Dye For, in Hendersonville, where my mother saw a gorgeous white mohair shawl with sequins knit in, and asked if I could knit something like that.  I said I could, and we got the yarn - one ball of a fine white mohair, and a separate silver yarn with sequins in it; I'll double strand it, and knit it on big needles - US 15s (10 mm) if I can manage it (it calls for 17s, 12 mm), 13s (9 mm) if I can't.  (I know I can manage size 13s.  I've never knit successfully with 15s, but I haven't tried in a couple of years, so it's possible.)  It should be light and airy and sparkly, probably just garter in a very large needle/small yarn combination, and it will be for Christmas for a friend of ours who pretty much only wears black and white.

 

We then had lunch at Seasons, where I had a delicious Cuban sandwich, with zucchini fries.  The fries were a revelation; they were fantastic.  We're going to see if we can figure out what they did, and whether we can do it or not.  (We always have prolific zucchini in the summers.)

 

And then our last stop was a used bookstore, the Book Exchange, run by the local Ladies Aid group (founded 1880), where we bought about 25 books for 11 dollars.  Including one grab bag, which had quite a variety of things in it.  That'll be fun, for later.  (I've put some of them that I can remember here.)

 

And then we drove home, and collapsed!

Dieses Mal ist das Cover blau und erinnert mich sehr stark an blaues Eis oder so. Abgebildet ist dieses Mal die Höhlenzeichnung eines Mammuts. Wieder einmal kann ich sagen, mir gefällt die einheitliche Gestaltung der verschiedenen Cover dieser Reihe.

Die Höhlenzeichnung passt perfekt zu der Geschichte und auch das eisblau als Farbe finde ich äußerst passend gewählt.

Meine Meinung
Eigentlich wollten Ayla und Jondalar nur einen kleinen Ausflug mache, als sie auf Talut und das Löwen-Lager stoßen.

Der große Anführer besagten Lagers bringt die beiden dazu, sich ihm anzuschließen und Zeit bei ihnen zu verbringen. Talut als Figur ist einmalig. Er ist ein so unglaublich herzlicher Mann, dass man gerne über die Tatsache hinwegsieht, dass er eigentlich über zwei Meter groß sein müsste, was meines Wissens zu dieser Zeit kaum möglich war und auch heute noch eher eine Seltenheit ist. Trotz dieser kleinen Ungereimtheit habe ich Talut direkt ins Herz geschlossen, ebenso wies eine etwas kritischere Schwester Tullie.

Ayla lernt nun viele der „Anderen“ kennen und lebt sich recht schnell bei den Mammutoi ein. Grund dazu ist Rydag, ein Kind von gemischten Geistern (Halb „Mensch“ halb Neandertaler), der ihrem Sohn Durc sehr ähnlich sieht. Ihm bringt sie im Laufe des Buches auch die Sprache des Clans bei, genauso wie den meisten anderen aus dem Löwen-Lager.

Wieder einmal verblüfft Ayla die Menschen mit ihrem umfangreichen Wissen und Können. Manchmal scheint das wirklich etwas übertrieben, aber man kann darüber hin Wegesehen, finde ich auf jeden Fall.

Was mich allerdings etwas gestört hat, war das Verhalten von Jondalar und Ayla. Stellenweiße hat es gewirkt wie aus einer billig produzierten Fernsehshow. Jondalar hat sich für Ayla geschämt, danach hat er sich noch mehr dafür geschämt, dass er sich überhaupt für sie geschämt hat. Es war und ist ein ewiges Hin und Her. Dann ist da noch Ranec, der von der ersten Sekunde an sehr fasziniert von Ayla ist und auch auf sie eine unglaubliche Faszination ausübt. Das mag zum großen Teil daran liegen, das Ranec dunkelhäutig ist und Ayla das noch nie zuvor gesehen hat. Sie ist neugierig auf den jungen Bildschnitzer und dieser wiederum ist bis über beide Ohren in Ayla verliebt. Irgendwann hat Jondalar dann nicht mehr mit Ayla geredet und so hat sich das Drama hochgeschaukelt. Meiner Meinung nach war es ziemlich überflüssig, aber irgendwo müssen die Buchstaben für 1008 Seiten ja auch herkommen und von nichts kommt nichts. Doch irgendwann ist diese „dramatische“ Geschichte etwas in den Hintergrund gerückt und es ging wieder um andere Dinge.

Ayla wurde vom Löwen-Lager adoptiert und ging zusammen mit ihnen und Jondalar auf Mammutjagd. Sie hat unglaublich viel erlebt und gelernt während ihrer Zeit beim Löwen-Lager. Als es irgendwann so weit ist und sie alle zum Sommertreffen ziehen, kocht das ganze Drama wieder auf. Ayla ist nahezu von der Idee besessen ihren Sohn Durc zu sich zurück zu hohlen. Manchmal kam mir das schon etwas heftig vor, wie sie alle die Dinge, die dagegen Sprachen komplett ausklammerte und sich nur darauf fixierte, dass sie selbst ihren Sohn an ihrer Seite haben wollte, koste es, was es wolle.

Jondalar spürt hingegen immer stärker den Wunsch, weiter zu seinen eigenen Leuten zu ziehen.

Ich mag diesen Teil immer noch ziemlich gerne, auch wenn ich ehrlich gestehen muss, dass ich mittlerweile auch etwas genervt war. Diesen Teil habe ich nämlich nicht selbst gelesen, sondern mir vorlesen lassen und das entsprechende Hörbuch ist etwas über 34 Stunden lang und das ist verdammt lang. Ich habe noch nie in meinem Leben ein auch nur ansatzweise so langes Hörbuch besessen oder gesehen. Es hat glaube ich fast 3 Wochen gedauert, bis ich durch war und wirklich alles angehört hatte. Zum Glück konnte man an der Audible-App den Schlafmodus einstellen, so habe ich nicht immer so lange nach der Stelle suche müssen, an der ich eingeschlafen bin.

Trotz der deutlicher zu Tag tretender Schwächen des Buches habe ich es gerne gelesen. Beim zweiten Mal jedoch muss ich zugeben, immer mal wieder ein paar Seiten übersprungen zu haben. Wie einige andere musste ich mir jetzt auch erst einmal eine kleine Ayla-Pause nehmen, bevor ich in Teil 4 starten werde.

I'd once started this book back in 2007, but at a point I was just so annoyed with it, I quit. Now, it was time to give it another try.

 

And it was not as bad as I remembered, some parts were nice to read (even though the amount of sex in it makes that you almost think you're reading 50 shades or something similar), and I was planning to give this book an extra star after reading it completely, but then the End happened. It was so bad, I couldn't stop myself from facepalming even though there was no one around to notice it. It almost made me vomit, it was terrible.

 

It goes like this:

 

*We're on the very day of Ayla's marriage, so you hope this is going to end the stupid love triangle (or it might even be a love pyramid); Anyway, her other love interest has left*

 

*She notices he has left, and goes looking for him*

 

*Finds him*

 

'Why don't you love me any more?'

 

'But you don't love me any more...'

 

*Some confusion as they find out that they in fact do love each other*

 

'Then why did you never ask me to marry you?'

 

'Marry me!'

 

'YES!'

 

'How about the guy you're supposed to marry this very evening?'

 

'Oh, well, I'll just ditch him, he won't mind'

 

* Some make up sex *

 

Afterwards they go and tell the other guy, and he is OK with it!

 

Seriously, this really is one of the worst endings I've ever read.

 

(And someone got me the fourth book in the Earth Children's series as a present, so I'll have to read that one as well)

It took a while for this story to get going for me. The misunderstanding between Ayla and Jondalar dragged from the beginning ALL the way to the end. That was the most frustrating for me. The author goes into great detail with how things are made. Sometimes, it's very interesting and sometimes, it's very boring. It also took me a while to warm up to the people from the Lion Camp but by the end, I was totally invested. When

 I was crying profusely. It was so sad and so touching. Ayla and Jondalar really learned a lot about themselves and that was the true purpose of this long ass misunderstanding. I am glad that Ayla didn't 

end up with Ranec.

 He wasn't right for Ayla. I'll definitely be continuing on with this series. 

The shit going on between Ayla and Jondalar is one huge, dragged out misunderstanding. I want it to be over already! Otherwise, this is a damn fine read.
