A Fatal Twist
A Fatal Twist - Tracy Weber A Fatal Twist - Tracy Weber Dollycas’s Thoughts

Kate’s new role as a friend’s doula for her the birth of her child takes her into new territory, a local medical center. Unfortunately, she still finds a dead body. A doctor she knows is having an affair AND she witnesses one of her yoga students leaving the scene of the crime. She is also dealing with Michael bringing home 2 abandoned puppies. Bella handles the dogs better than Kate expected at first but with her medical issues these extra roommates may not be a good idea long term. So dogs, doula, murder investigation, and oh yeah her full time job teaching yoga. It is going to take more than meditation to get Kate through all this.

I am always excited when a new book comes out in this series.

In A Fatal Twist, all my favorite characters are back and two that could barely stand to be in the same room with the other form a bond and a surprising friendship. Both characters have truly evolved and as a reader that is so important as a series continues. It is the key that keeps us coming back for each new story. I also loved pregnant Rene, she is just priceless, she had me laughing out loud so many times I lost count.

We also learn what it means to be a doula. Kate learns it is much more detailed that she thought and readers gain insight as well. I wish I would have had one for my children’s births.

The author clearly know her subject being a yoga teacher herself. She has a keen insight to take her passion and craft mystery stories around it. She has done this now 4 times and I hope she continues for quite some time. In this installment, she twists things around and around making extremely unexpected connections that propel readers through the story at a pretty rapid pace. There is always something happening, never a lull, hence not a good stopping point, making it very hard to put down even though it is way past bedtime.

I have several reasons for loving these stories, there is always a great mystery, the characters are genuine and continue to grow, relationships are fluid, there is humor in all the right places and I always learn something new.

Years ago, after the accident that left my right side paralyzed, I had a doctor suggest I try yoga. I could never imagine how I could do yoga when I can’t move one side of my body or even get down and up off the floor without help. But in this story Kate has a class, South Bath, where people lie on their mats in a comfortable position, such a Corpse Pose, covered with a blanket while a concert of drums, chimes, bamboo sticks and vocalizations happens around them in a candlelit room. It is said to have a soothing effect and helps to center the person. Now that is something I could do, as long as there was someone to help me get to the floor and off it when class ended.

When George and Bella―a homeless alcoholic and his intimidating German shepherd―disturb the peace outside her studio, yoga instructor Kate Davidson’s Zen-like calm is stretched to the breaking point. Kate tries to get rid of them before Bella scares the yoga pants off her students. Instead, the three form an unlikely friendship.

One night Kate finds George’s body behind her studio. The police dismiss his murder as a drug-related street crime, but she knows George wasn’t a dealer. So Kate starts digging into George’s past while also looking for someone to adopt Bella before she’s sent to the big dog park in the sky. With the murderer nipping at her heels, Kate has to work fast or her next Corpse Pose may be for real.

Tell us about your writing - What genre do you prefer to write? What books, stories, other publications that you've written are your personal favorites? Anything new coming up?

So far I’ve only written cozy mysteries, though I have an idea for a sci-fi/dystopian standalone. I’m not sure I’ll ever actually write that novel, but who knows? I will always have a special affection for my first book, Murder Strikes a Pose, because in addition to being a mystery, it’s the love story between Kate and her special needs German shepherd, Bella.  I’m so excited that it’s finally out in audio.

I also write for a number of blogs.  My personal blog is at http://www.wholelifeyoga.com/blog/.  The weekly articles showcase my love of yoga, dogs and mystery.  But mainly yoga and dogs!

What about you as a person? What do you do to relax? Favorite movies or tv shows? Hobbies?

I’m a yoga teacher, so how can I not say yoga! In addition to practicing yoga, however, I relax by walking my dog. Being with her in nature makes me realize how much joy can be found in the small things in life. Sipping Blackthorn Cider at my favorite ale house comes in a close second.

I don’t have many hobbies, but I watch an embarrassing about of television.  Right now my two favorite series are Brain Dead and The Walking Dead.  Hmm…I’m sensing a theme here…

What gets your creative juices going? Do you write to a music, and do you want to share your playlist?

Being in nature sparks my inner muse.  I can’t concentrate with music in the background, so I have no favorite playlists.  These days I even drive listening to audio books, so I’m not current on music.  But my favorite artist two years ago was Mika.  His music is upbeat and I love the lyrics.

"All writers must have cats, especially if they write fantasy or speculative fiction." Do you have a stand on this one? Any cute pictures of your kitty or other pet?

I’ve owned well over 100 cats in my life. (I’m not kidding—I grew up on a farm, and cats used to follow me like kids after the Pied Piper) My last kitty, Maggie, died almost two years ago of lymphoma.  Tasha, the German shepherd that inspired my mystery series, died of old age this past summer.  This is one of my favorite photos of her.

?????????????

Now, I share my life with my newest love, German shepherd puppy Ana.  I love this photo of the two of us, taken the morning we met in this past August.  She was six weeks old at the time.  She is obviously the more photogenic of the two of us.

What organizations do you recommend for those wanting to become writers? Any advice you'd like to share about writing?

Sisters in Crime is a great organization for crime writers, and I especially recommend their Guppies group. Other than that, hook up with local writers groups and writing organizations.  If you live in the Seattle area, I highly recommend the Pacific Northwest Writers Association.

As for advice, my biggest is don’t give up!  Writing is a tough, tough business. You have to have perseverance and a very thick skin to succeed.

Getting Cozy in the Big City

If you ask five people the key characteristics of a cozy mystery, you’ll get at least six distinct answers. ;-) I’ve grown to believe that what constitutes a “cozy” has more to do with how the mystery feels versus any distinct rules. And the rules that do exist? Well, they seem to get grayer every day. For my part, I love exploring the gray area.

Most cozies have a few key elements in common:

  • The story revolves around solving a mystery, usually a murder.
  • The (typically female) protagonist is an amateur sleuth—in my Downward Dog Mystery series, a yoga teacher—versus a police officer or a private investigator.
  • Profanity is minimized.
  • Blood and gore are off-screen.
  • Sex is behind closed doors.
  • The crime and its resolution take place within a tight-knit community, usually a small town.

Karma’s a Killer, like the rest of my Downward Dog Mystery series, is clearly cozy in tone, but it doesn’t fully meet the criteria above. Although characters in my book have been known to utter the occasional mild swear word, the biggest difference is that my series takes place in Seattle. Seattle isn’t exactly New York City, but it’s not Cabot Cove, either. Still, Seattle’s as much a part of me as my German heritage. I couldn’t imagine setting my first series anywhere else.

I came to Seattle for college at age eighteen and took root as deeply as a hundred-year-old oak tree. My mother loved to tease me about the first and last time she and my father took me home to Billings, Montana for summer break. My friends and I looked so desolate, she felt like she was kidnapping me for a three-month prison camp.

That summer in 1983 was the last time I spent more than two weeks away from Seattle.

Seattle gets a bad rap for being gray and rainy, but the flipside is that you’ll never see a place greener or more lush outside of the tropics. Within an hour or two, you can visit a major university, climb a mountain, go boating, dip your toes in the ocean, ski, attend live theater, shop in a quaint island town, and hang out with a troll holding onto an actual Volkswagen. And don’t get me started on the annual nude bicycle parade…

So even though Seattle doesn’t fit the small-town criteria, it’s a blast to explore in a cozy mystery series. Diverse communities, laid-back residents, and subcultures ranging from eco-sensitive bicycle commuters to Ethiopian immigrants. I have a feeling that my yoga teacher/sleuth Kate will have no shortage of places to explore—or murders to solve—anytime soon.

What are some of your favorite cozy series? Do they fit the criteria I outlined above, or—like mine—do they dance in the gray area?

About Karma’s a Killer:
Yoga instructor Kate Davidson is about to discover that when it comes to murder, there’s no place like om. When she agrees to teach doga—yoga for dogs—at a fundraiser for Dogma, a local animal rescue, Kate believes the only real damage will be to her reputation. But when an animal rights protest at the event leads to a suspicious fire and a drowning, a few downward-facing dogs will be the least of Kate’s problems…

The police arrest Dharma, a woman claiming to be Kate’s estranged mother, and charge her with murder. To prove Dharma’s innocence, Kate, her boyfriend Michael, and her German shepherd sidekick Bella dive deeply into the worlds of animal activism, organizational politics, and the dangerous obsessions that drive them.

And if solving a murder weren't complicated enough, Kate will also have to decide whether or not to reconcile with the estranged mother who abandoned her over thirty years ago. Not to mention having to contend with an almost-bankrupt animal rescue, a cantankerous crow, an unwanted pigeon houseguest, and a rabbit in a doga class. What could possibly go wrong?

Karma's a Killer
Karma's a Killer - Tracy Weber Karma's a Killer - Tracy Weber Dollycas’s Thoughts

This is my favorite book in this series so far and I absolutely love the cover.

Yoga for dogs! Yes, I have heard of it, but those have to be some well behaved dogs if the experience is going to be tranquil for the dogs and their owners. Kate’s class has a great turnout but things quickly turn to chaos when another type of animal and their person decides to take part in the class. Add to that a group of protesters set on disruption and shortly thereafter a dead body and you have a great start for a mystery.

Kate has really grown since the first book. When her mother comes to town with a group of animal activists Kate isn’t very receptive to the woman that abandoned her when she was just a toddler but when her mother is accused of murder she can’t help but get involved. With the help of her boyfriend, Micheal, her fabulous dog Bella, a lawyer that raises goats, and a very pregnant best friend, she sets out to clear her mother’s name and find out why her mother left her. With several calming breaths Kate handles these stressful events and many more before we reach the final page. Readers and Kate learn so much about her past in this installment. Kate’s reactions were perfect and so real. She went through all the emotions you would expect for anyone in her situation.

With a big dose of humor Tracy Weber takes us on quite an adventure. The drama of the fire at the fundraiser, the return of Kate’s mom, the body discovery and all the aftermath are joined Kate’s daily life. Things like dealing with a pesky pigeon, learning about the rehabilitation of a very friendly crow, activists attacks, a little political corruption, a home renovation, and other people’s relatives behaving badly. Kate’s life is definitely not dull by any means.

This series is going in a fantastic direction. Animal lovers, you must read this story!!
