The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses
The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses - Paul Goble

I loved this book when I was a child, and it's still great. It tells the story of a Native American girl who loved wild horses. When the herd living near her tribe flees in fright from a storm, she jumps on the back of one and is carried far away from her tribe. She is seen later, living as one among the wild horses. Tailored for students in 4th and 5th grades, this book makes a great addition to fiction lessons. I would read this book aloud to the class to supplement cultural fiction and native american mythology lessons.

This is a book that the school I'm student teaching at has as required text from the people who make the schools lesson plans. I read this to my kids a couple of weeks ago and boy did this book confuse my students as well as me. But it did hit home the fact that we were going to be wondering about and questioning the book.

This book, in my opinion, was very confusing to follow but it is a very good book to initiate he sense of 'wonder' for the students. The book is about a girl that loved being with the ild horses. She could understand them and the horses understood her more than her own people. One day, she was with the horses and something happened that made the horses run off with her on the back of one. She ended up being away from her family and people for over a year. When she finally saw her family again, she realized that she would rather be with the horses because they understand her. In the nd, she ends up turning into a wild horse herself. I wouls have the students either turn and talk or write a quick, brief sentence or two about what they wonder at the beginning of the book, the middle, and the end. I think this book could be used in grades 3 - 4. The book is a level of 4.1.

Yet another female victim dead for the thinnest of reasons ever, that is to say, a starting point for the plot. And the victim is a young woman who owns her sexuality. And the hero once again falls for an inappropriately young woman in a creepy way. And another woman is mocked for her feminism. I love it despite all those issues. It does evoke movie-making fairly well, as well as the remarkable changes of the twentieth century. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but there are certain visuals that stay with me over the years. And the love of riding.
