The Beyonce Effect: Essays on Sexuality, Race and Feminism - Adrienne Trier-Bieniek

For more reviews, check out my blog: Craft-Cycle

I received a copy of this book through LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review.

Overall, it was a good book. It look me a while to get through because some of the essays are a bit dense, but overall it was good.

The essays range in focus from celebrity motherhood and sexual pleasure to the politics of respectability and empowerment. I liked the various lenses that the contributors wrote through. Each had their own view and their own focus, which made for an interesting read.

For me, there were two minor downsides to the book. One was the grammatical errors. There are quite a few scattered throughout the text. For the most part, the message is still received, but I had to read certain sentences over again to make sure I got what the person was saying beyond the typo. For the most part, they were small errors such as using the plural form of a word instead of the possessive. Small inconvenience, but nothing too major.

The other downside was that even though the essays all focus on different things, the examples they use are pretty much the same. Almost all of the essays referenced Beyonce performing in front of the Feminist sign and bell hooks calling her a "terrorist". Yes, these two things are huge in the discussion of Beyonce and feminism, but reading about them over and over again (along with many other examples) was very irritating. This is not the fault of any of the contributors as they would have no way of knowing what other people were writing, but it made the book pretty repetitive.

Overall, this was a good read, especially for those interested in Beyonce and her brand of feminism. An interesting look into multiple perspectives of the same topic.

There Are More Beautiful Things Than Beyoncé - poetry
There Are More Beautiful Things Than Beyonce - Morgan Parker

"Summertime and the living is
extraordinarily difficult...

This book is uncorrected proof. You read it
on your eyelids. You sleep under it.

...You say you read it but you didn't."

Sometimes books of poetry are extremely accessible with easy subjects about love and trees. Sometimes the poems are so tightly forced into form that if there was ever emotion involved, it's been stamped out. Sometimes a book of poems doesn't hit the mark.

None of that is like Morgan Parker's poetry. She's a good poet, experimental but not just weird, she's interesting, pushing boundaries, pushing consciousness, pushing her reader into some discomfort and pain rather than counted measure. I wouldn't say these are as accessible as nursery rhymes, but they aren't so "Poetry-ish" that they deny the feels.

She shows off her womanhood in all its glory here: complete with body parts, multiple Beyoncé-s, list poems, poems that feel found, surprises, joy, pain, grief, deadpan recountments, teaching poems and poems of discovery. She's in turns rough and then smooth as butter. I found my sense of smell heightened from these poems, which was just bizarre until I noticed my fingertips were tingling too. It literally woke me up and figuratively too.

I borrowed this copy from my library, and now I'm going to own one in "less than 24 hours" says the only retailer who would get me a copy. (Maybe some stores should try just a little harder and I wouldn't have to resort to online marketplaces. Anyway...)

I really loved these poems in the time I had them from the library. I didn't want to give them back, but someone else should enjoy them. I can actually tell from the shape of this book that lots of people already have, which is not the usual case with public library poetry books. I know that I will love them again and again.

Kim Kardashian and Beyoncé Wore Matching Denim Pencil Skirts

Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian have quite a lot in common: banging’ bods, rapper hubbies, and famous spawns with oddball names. Both women are powerhouses in their own right—Kim a paparazzi princess with her name endorsing everything from beauty to fashion to energy drinks and Beyoncé, a flawless performer—but they've always had pretty different styles for the most part. Kim, who now officially favors minimalism, dresses exclusively in denim, white, black, and nude. Bey, on the other hand, is a constant chameleon, embracing print and color, and even going as far as forgoing designer duds for off the rack pieces. Recently, however, both ladies were spotted sporting Frame Denim’s "Le High" pencil skirt and it’s not really a surprise.

Frame Denim, founded on the concept that jeans are a wardrobe essential that need to be chic, yet still fashion forward, is the perfect place for Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian to come together. And more importantly, they both rocked it in their own way. Beyoncé, with a fitted white tee, a denim jacket, and an oversized Chanel pin that just screams “Bow Down” and Kim with a menswear-inspired denim shirt (perhaps borrowed from ‘Ye’s closet) and her nude Prada heels, which have become a staple as of late.

So...anyone else planning to buy a denim pencil skirt, immediately?

Beyoncé. Nieoficjalna biografia
Beyoncé. Nieoficjalna biografia - Caroline Corcoran

- rozpoczęcie kariery solowej, kariera aktorska, wydanie płyt "Dangerously In Love", "B'Day", "I Am... Sasha Fierce", a także "4",
- życie prywatne (między innymi w oparciu o film dokumentalny "Life Is But a Dream"), związek z Jay'em-Z, narodziny córki etc.,
- aktywność humanitarną i przyjaźń Beyoncé i jej męża z prezydencką parą Barackiem i Michelle Obamą.

Oceniam jaką dobrą i polecam szczególnie fanom piosenkarki.
