The Girl with a Clock for a Heart
The Girl with a Clock for a Heart - Peter Swanson

George is having a midlife slump and then his girlfriend from college, who he hasn’t seen in 20ish years, walks into his local bar, needing him to help her out of the mess she’s in.

This book felt like a noir movie, but I just couldn’t buy into it. I found the story to be slow, predictable, and trite. This book has two time lines, and I thought that the college time line worked a lot better, which caused the story to drag more for me. George was such a dull character to me that having him as a narrator was painful. Also George at 40 something was basically the same character as George at 18. One thing I did enjoy was the open ending of this story, I was glad to write in an ending that I found less painful than this book.

The City of Mirrors
The City of Mirrors: A Novel (Book Three of The Passage Trilogy) - Justin Cronin

I really should have stopped after feeling so Meh about The Twelve but I just had to finish. I didn’t really like this book, and while it brought things in the series full circle, I mostly didn’t care.  The pacing of this book didn’t work for me. I felt like the info dump about Zero was far too long, whiny, and broke the flow so severely that I was angry. And for being about a third of the book I finished feeling less sympathetic toward the character which I don’t think is what Cronin was shooting for.  The epilog didn’t work for me, the end fates of most of our main characters didn’t work for me.

I feel like most of this book was unnecessary and/or filler. The maybe third of this book that actually wrapped up the trilogy was good but the rest of it was so painful to me that have a hard time looking on that third favorably.

The Last Ship
The Last Ship - William Brinkley It's a Christmas Miracle, I finished this book!! It was...a thing I did. This book is exactly what I think of as an old man book. There's a lot war and navy stuff with a propensity to use the same 50 cent word in excess (Here's looking at you Quiesce). This book also felt rather misogynistic, which is never good. Final thoughts, this book is like an adventure survival story without any of those elements but rather just a very long rambling narrative were everything is told and nothing is shown.

This book is what I think of as an old man book. So far it's been, mostly, Ships! Navy! Can Believe They Let The Women in! I am so not interested but my sister in law loved the TV show and is so long maybe it will get better....

The Birthing House
The Birthing House - Christopher Ransom

After collecting his fathers life insurance, Conrad and his wife, Jo, move to a former birthing house to rehab their marriage and get out of LA. However the house may have come with a little more than they bargained for. Is the house haunted, or is Conrad just losing his mind following his father's unexpected death?

I wanted to read horror, thriller, suspense book. Instead I got this, which is so sad. This was such a mess, I really should have DNFed it. However since I didn't, I feel very confident in my rating. This book read like it didn't have an editor or was a first draft, and then in sections it really read like a porn.  Seriously at one point there was some very graphic sex but it was written in the most awkward and unappealing way that I couldn't help but roll my eyes and laugh and how smarmy it felt.

Overall the characters were pretty terrible. Conrad is flat and also apparently is the author which he take the time to tell us in the middle of the book. No, literally he brakes the fourth wall and says something along the lines of "Because you've figured out he is me" in a weird monologue in the middle of the book. His wife Jo isn't consistent in the personality traits that Conrad puts on her. Holly's story isn't cleanly or interestingly placed into the story. Nadia, the other main character, is such a weird throw away for the most part but also crucial to build the haunted house. Also in the last like 30ish pages we find out about the doctor and women that ran the birthing house that maybe haunting the house. Everything about the house's history is really rushed causing the book to lose a lot of the potential creep factor. I wish we had started to get parts of the house's history peppered through the book instead so that we could have time for the creepy vibe to develop and given us more time to wonder if the house is haunted or if it's Conrad's mental status.

Please just skip this book, I wish I would have.
