Review: Snow Angel
Snow Angel - Ronica Black

I received a copy from Netgalley.

A beautifully written, passionate and romantic novella. I read this in less than an hour and loved every word of it. The novella tells the story of two very different women, world famous actress Ellie and reclusive writer Maggie. Maggie lives in remote cabin and a panicked call from a friend leads her to find Ellie who has been visiting the same friend and crashed her SUV in the snow.

Maggie is quiet and sensible whilst Ellie is clearly hiding from something, she’s confused and disorientated from the accident and very suspicious. Being a world famous actress she has the idea in her head that everyone is out to get something from her. Maggie is simply a nice kind person who wants to help because she wants to help.

Maggie has a few secrets of her own, she’s been hurt in a previous relationship many years ago and its had a damaging lasting effect.  As Ellie stays and recovers she gets to know Maggie better and realise things about herself she’s tried to bury and ignore for many many years.

Its soft and romantic as the two fall into a passionate relationship. Very intimate, and (very hot) sex scenes. Though not without its problems as Maggie and Ellie have to deal with each other and Ellie’s life in the public eye and Maggie’s tendency to hide from people.  Amazingly pulled together for such a short novella and just 110 pages, but believable with two different but well written lead characters.

I loved it.

Bookish Bingo Summer 2015

Sign ups for Summer Bookish Bingo (now over on Pretty Deadly Blog) has been extended till July 16th so I've signed up for that one. So I'm quite pleased about that, now I don't miss out on the Summer card.

As the card runs from June to end of August books read in June still count, so some squares I've crossed off already with my June books.

Out of your Comfort Zone - Black Iris by Leah Raeder

Blue Cover - Emmy & Oliver by Robin Benway

Travel - These Broken Stars by Megan Spooner and Amie Kaufman

POC Writer - An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

Face On Cover - Damage Done by Amanda Panitch

I will be creating a Summer 2015 bookish bingo on my tag list.

Now I need a plan for the rest of the squares

Retelling - Cruel Beatuty by Rosamund Hodge (currently reading)

Purple Cover - Exquisite Captive by Heather Demetrios (currently reading

MC with psychical disability - She Is Not Invisible Marcus Sedgewick (paperback)

Tearjerker - The Last Time We Say Goodbye by Cynthia Hand (hardback)

Multi POV: The Walled City by Ryan Graudin (currently reading)

Award Winner - Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell (kindle)

Finish a Series - The 100 #3 Homecoming y Kass Morgan (paperback)

Young Adult (over half of my books are YA! How am I supposed to pick one?!) This one will probably change depending on my mood and will most likely be the next book I read and rate 5 stars.

Beach Read - Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson (paperback)

Cover Has Been Changed - Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins (paperback) I'm planning on taking all my Morgan Matson and Stephanie Perkins books with me when I go on holiday for a week next days that will easily cover these two squares/

Other squares will require some thinking about but that's a starting point :)

Review: Driving Lessons
Driving Lessons: A You Know Who Girls Novel - Annameekee Hesik

I recieved a copy from Netgalley.

This is fun enjoyable novel about a fifteen coming on sixteen year old girl, Abbey dealing with high school, dating, friends, and coming out to her mum as a lesbian. With basketball and driving lessons as well. It wasn't ground breaklingly brilliant, in its themes, but it was fun.

Abbey is a reasonably likeable heroine, quite ordinary but with a good sense of morals and the drama I imagine a lot of high school teenagers deal with. I haven't read the first book in the series but it was fairly easy to jump into the story and pick up what had gone on. Only thing I wasn't too impressed with is Abbey is quite hypocritical throughout a lot of the novel, she finds out things her friends are doing and explodes when it goes pear shaped and she usually gets involved, but then she sneaks around and lies an awful lot. It does improve, though it was a little annoying.

There is a cast of lively support characters, problems with a bully, a best friend with questionable behaviour and Abbey trying to tell her mum about her sexuality. She has some great out of the closet friends to talk to and her attempts at dating and finding a girlfriend were enjoyable to read about as well as reading about her going through her day to day high school life.

I also really enjoyed Abbey's relationship with her mum. It wasn't perfect but there was nice mother and teenager interaction which was good to see, believable as well. And also very sex positive which gets a big thumbs up as well.

A most enjoyable book.

Review: Out of this World
Out of This World - Maggie Morton

I received a copy from Netgalley.

After 43% I have come to the conclusion I'm not really all that interested in finishing this book. So I'm marking it as DNF.

The world building was kind of interesting, and the sex was exceptionally hot at first. I'm not that interested in the characters. Anandra feels very flat and 2 dimensional, and Iris is bland and uninteresting, at least to me. While I commend her for trying to get on with her life after a bad breakup....throwing herself into something new...she literally falls into this new world. And just sort of...accepts it and follows this strange woman without much question after one night of hot passion. Iris's strength appears to be in her sexual awakening with Anandra. While Iris is no stranger to sex, this new woman brings out a side of her she always wanted to explore but never had the guts. While that bit was pretty good, Iris doesn't really appeal to me much as a character. She's too trusting and accepting of strange and weird things.

Everything feels kind of...convenient in the form of magic in the book. Particularly in the want something and oh look! it appears way. It was kind of amusing at first, particularly when used during sex play, but got old very fast.

The writing is pretty good, nice and descriptive. The world building was okay. But I'm finding myself starting to skim and really not that interested in how it ends. I would definitely read something else by this author, this particular book is just not for me.

I received a copy from Netgalley.

I found this book browsing through Netgalley. The blurb caught my attention right off. The story was interesting. The mythology and paranormal aspects of the story were what fascinated me.

Though there was something about the main character and her attitude that I just didn't really like. I can't put my finger on what it was. I just didn't like her much.

That being says though the book was well written and interesting with a good plot and great world building. I would definitely read something by this author again.

Thank you Netgalley and Bold Stroke Books did approving my request to view the title.

And as the book was first published in May that crosses of a square for my Book bingo challenge - a spring release.
