Oberon, sausage savant & author of the column "Meat of the Month"
Staked - Kevin Hearne

Another entertaining & action packed instalment in the Iron Druid series. The gang are all back & we follow Atticus, Granuaile & Owen as they deal with vengeful Gods, hairy dark elves & the relentless threat of vampires. As for Oberon, he wrestles with the possibility poutine may be more delicious than sausages.

Atticus decides it's time to end the 2000 year war between druids & vamps for good. He needs an army & sets about recruiting various critters to his cause. But nothing comes for free & he has to return favours to secure the alliances he needs.

In Owen's opinion, the world needs more of their kind & establishes a druid boot camp. But first he must discover how an old foe escapes prison & take care of some smelly (and immodest) bog trolls who are stalking him.

Granuaile is done living in fear of Loki & gets help from a Polish coven to escape his clutches. She's also done with her asshat* step father & plots to finally get revenge for her miserable childhood.

The 3 main characters spend most of the book apart & chapters alternate between them as they narrate their adventures. There are plenty of battles, gore, beard fights & laughs before they join forces for the inevitable showdown.

If you enjoy urban fantasy, mythology & giggling, these books are as close to a sure thing as you'll find. As a Canadian, I particularly enjoyed the author's hilarious take on our culture when Atticus spends time in "Trah-no".

Beneath the humour there is a slightly more serious tone. Several key figures don't survive as a result of others' actions & Atticus struggles with guilt & grief over the loss of a friend.

Some long running plot lines are tied up but it's clear Atticus & Granuaile still have challenges ahead before they find their HEA. And Oberon...well, his world is about to be rocked. Can't wait for book #9.

* Had to comment on this. In order to post my review on Amazon, I had to remove the epithet "asshat". But I still think it best describes the character so please forgive my potty mouth.

New Era - The Chronicles of The Revealer - Laura Salesa

REVIEWS BY READERS:

Format: Paperback
Really a nice book. I've started it in the evening, and then I haven't stop until the end. Even if the subject can seem used, the 21-12-2012, the story is well written and comes out with a promising end. The style of the writer is fresh, nice and light, but at the same time really interesting. Even the use of the different graphic styles create an atmosphere that involves the reader. Recommended.

Format: Paperback
The first thing to say, is that this book is beautifully produced. Laura Salesa puts her knowledge of graphic design to good use. Even the page numbers are exquisite, and the formatting makes it highly readable.

The book originally attracted me because of its premise: namely, the end of the world. Laura Salesa depicts a civilisation without electricity, gas or any real kind of power that finds itself struggling to survive against the elemental forces that have been unleashed on the world. Her young heroine, Dana, is a writer, and the text moves between direct first person accounts and her diary entries, giving us lots of prisms through which to view the events unfolding. Dana’s observations build her character and cast interesting lights on types of catastrophe we might think has a predictable response.

The big success of this book is Dana’s warmth as a character. She’s optimistic (though not without human doubt and numerous trials and tribulations), and her kindness and positive outlook in the face of such adverse circumstances makes a welcome change from the commonly depressed anti-heroes of most post-apocalyptic works. Laura writes from Dana’s perspective effortlessly, and the narration is direct, detailed, and full of anchoring information that makes the action seem real. She’s a loving heroine, and her search for love becomes just as important a part of the story as her search for truth – and if that’s not human, I don’t know what is!

  •  “A brilliant novel with an increasing rhythm that culminates in an encouraging end and leaves you eager to know the continuity of each character and the common outcome. I look forward to reading the next part of the saga!”

    - MARIA RIVERO
  • “New Era. An interesting and easy to read book. Well documented, it has you ‘hooked’ from page one and you can’t put it down until you finish it. It took me two days to read it and it left me wanting more… I hope impatiently that there is a second part. I recommend it to anyone who, like me, look for good entertainment in a book.”

    - M JESUS SANTANDER

  • “You get hooked on this book straight away connecting with the protagonist, putting yourself in her shoes; the author of this book manages to get you into the character without excessive descriptions, with only a few lines she is able to connect us to the protagonist and her surroundings, something I value in this type of novels. In spite of living through our protagonist in a dystopian society, our author manages to get us hooked on the protagonist’s personal experiences and makes us value them.”

  • - DAVID ASENSIO

  • “Entertaining, easy to read and well put together.”.

    - BORJA GONZALEZ

Format: Paperback
I have just finished reading the New Era novel of Laura Salesa, and what a read it is too. Certainly a very different end of the world to the usual apocalyses one encounters. May be because Laura is a real romantic at heart, and for her the heart of this event is not about the technology or even the terrible climactic conditions that she depicts; no, it's more about the people and about relationships. She describes a feisty heroine Dana (whom I have to say is a lass to fall in love with, and whom I cannot help but feel is a little bit autobiographical too!) who cares, who is resourceful, who is brave and pro-active. And we follow her adventures - and a strong romantic thread - as she tries to make sense of why and how the world has had it magnetic polarity altered, and how certain people have developed super-powers. By the time you reach the end of this you will have to read the sequel - it's a cliff-hanger. One other thing that is really striking about this book is the quality of the production: this has not been published by any major publishing house and yet the cover art, the quality feel of the paper and print, is astonishingly high. So a great debut novel, really worth purchasing, and I hope the first of many from her.

Got to meet Marissa Meyer yesterday! Great pleasure, she was such a generous, funny and lovely person! I got to tag along to the librarians-only brunch with Marissa (shhhh, thanks to my sister, who is a librarian in the Alachua County Library District) and Marissa gave an awesome presentation before the annual Battle of the Books (Cinder was one of the battle books) as well as taking the time out to sign books and hand out swag! Awesome experience, awesome lady!

(My favorite piece of swag was the button that says 'Wolf is my Alpha!' And, yes, she's tall. I'm only 5'3", but I was wearing heels! :D)
