Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type
Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type - Doreen Cronin,Betsy Lewin

Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type by Betsy Lewin is a book about Farmer Brown who has a problem. His cows like to type. Farmer Brown thinks it's odd when he hears typing sounds coming from the barn. But his troubles really begin when his cows start leaving him notes. First they demand better working conditions, then they stage a strike.

Guided Reading: Level M

Classroom Activities:

Perform the story as a readers theater exercise.

Ask the students to write letters from their pets to themselves. (use a relative’s or friend’s pet if they don’t have one) What would the pet ask for? What might they want to change in the house? Have students draw a picture of the pet and display the picture with the letters on a bulletin board.

Give students writing prompts to complete the sentences or begin a paragraph or story: • Living on a farm would be…

I like to keep warm by…

If my pet could talk, it would say…

My favorite thing to do on a computer is…

This is a silly fiction book that is popular in today's schools. When farmer Brown isn't meeting his cows needs, they learn to type so they can communicate with him! Before he knows it, the cows are typing farmer Brown letters! Farmer Brown can't believe it, can you? Farmer Brown doesn't like his cows "bossing" him around and refuses to help them. So what do the cows do? They go on strike!

How would I use this book in my classroom?

I would ask my students to pretend that they are one of farmer Browns cows. I would ask them to write farmer Brown a letter requesting something that they think they will need and why they need it. This would be a fun interactive activity!

Click Clack Moo Cows That Type Review
Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type - Doreen Cronin,Betsy Lewin

Click Clack Moo Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin, is a well know children's book. In this fiction book, Farmer Brown's cows find a typewriter in their barn and write farmer Brown letters requesting him things, but when Farmer Brown refuses to provide the cows with the things that they asked for, the cows go on strike. I would use this book for grades 2nd-3rd, I think it would be a good book to teach cause and effect or sequencing of events. (Book Reading level: Lexile 470L)

The cows have learned to type and are making demands to Farmer Brown.  He is not going to take demands from cows! The cows start striking and make a deal to get what they want.

Lexile Measure: AD470L

I would use this with a writing activity. The students would write a note to Farmer Brown telling them what they want.

Leveling system The Lexile, reading level AD470L. The classroom can participate in writing thank you notes and then the class can hand delivery them to the staff at the school.
