The Day the Crayons Quit
The Day the Crayons Quit - Drew Daywalt,Oliver Jeffers

Since the letters run a little long, I get the feeling that this picture book would suit young school-aged children best, but I'd be interested to read it with kids and see what they think. The premise is cute, but it's not one I would love to read over and over again.

Mrs. Thomas' Favorite Books
The Day the Crayons Quit - Drew Daywalt,Oliver Jeffers

Duncan just wants to color, but when he opens his box of crayons, he finds only letters.  The letters are hilarious and from his crayons. They all quit! Duncan finds a solution for them all to be happy.

I would use this in the classroom with a writing/coloring activity. There would be pictures of all of the crayons and the students would trace the names of each color and then color the crayon the correct color.

The Day The Crayons Quit By Drew Daywalt

This is a silly book that brings crayons to life. The crayons are writing letters to their owner Duncan why they have decided to quit. As Duncan is reading all the letters, he gets a really good idea on what to do next. One great activity to have the students complete after reading this story would be to have the students draw a picture with all the colors they have in their color box, just like Duncan did.

The Day the Crayons Came Home
The Day the Crayons Came Home - Drew Daywalt,Oliver Jeffers

Duncan's crayons are tired of being forgotten about. Poor Maroon got lost in the sofa cushions, turquoise got stuck to Duncans socks after accidentally being stuck in the dryer, and Pea Green who knows no kid likes peas so he won't get used. All of these crayons write post cards to Duncan asking to be rescued from their fates. This is such a fun story to read to your kids about what might be going on in their crayons heads when they aren't around. An activity I would have my students complete after reading this book is to have them write a letter to one of the forgotten crayons urging them to come home. In the book, Duncan makes a compromise on how he can make all his crayons feel loved and I would have the students try to pitch this to one of the forgotten crayons to get them to come home. It gives them experience in not only writing letters but in persuasive writing as well.

When Duncan goes to use his crayons he finds notes from all the crayons and how they are feeling! Red is overwhelmed. Purple is tired of being colored outside the lines. Beige doesn't like to be called light brown or dark tan and doesn't like being in second place to Brown! Grey is tired. White is feeling empty. Black doesn't like to be an outline. Green is writing for Yellow and Orange because they won't talk, they both think they should be the color of the sun! Blue is feeling like he needs a break, Pink is feeling unused and Peach doesn't like having a cover! Duncan has to figure out how to make all the crayons happy so he can continue to color! I would use this book to work on expression and voice!
