The Very Hungry Caterpillar
The Very Hungry Caterpillar - Eric Carle

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a picture book that follows the life cycle of a caterpillar as it starts by coming out of its egg, all the way to becoming a butterfly. It teaches the days of the week and counting up to five. This would be a good book to read and incorporate a math lesson into it. I would have a picture of a caterpillar labeled with numbers 1-5 written above each circle making up its body. Then students can sequence the story on their own using pictures of the different items and their correct number that the caterpillar ate.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is an enjoyable book that students love! Students stay engaged as they read about the hungry caterpillar eating through large amounts of food. The book consists of the days of the week as well as quantities. Not only could teachers use this book when teaching a science lesson on the life cycle of a caterpillar, it would be great for sequencing activities and counting.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar, written by Eric Carle, is about a caterpillar who has a huge appetite. As each day past, he eats more than the precious day. On the last day of the week, once he is done eating, he builds its cocoon and turns into a beautiful butterfly. I can use this book in my classroom when teaching the days of the week and numbers! I can go back and do a picture walk and count how many food items that the caterpillar ate on each page, connect the number to the illustration.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a fun story that can be read from Pre-K through 1st grade. It is about a caterpillar who eats a lot of different food items each day, and displays the life cycle of a caterpillar.

You can do a sequencing activity with this story, determining what the caterpillar ate each day, or you can do a science activity about the life cycle of a caterpillar. You can give the students a picture of a caterpillar with Monday - Sunday written in each part of the caterpillar's body, and the students can either write or draw what the caterpillar ate each day.

The very Hungry Caterpillar written by Eric Carle is a 2.9 on the Accelerated Reading leveling system. The story follows the week of a caterpillar as he eats quite a bit of food. The caterpillar eats so much in the end, he turns into a butterfly. The illustrations are eye catching and interesting. This simple book can be used to teach the days of the week to early learners, but also the life cycle of a butterfly to older elementary.
