Book Review: Hellhounds (Death By Reaper MC #1) By Esther E. Schmidt
Hellhounds - Esther E. Schmidt

I loved the initial concept of this story. The author found a very good way of meshing together paranormal romance with MC romance. I wish there was more of a detailed hierarchy for the MC that was presented. As fascinating as the concept was I would have also liked to have had more world-building aspects to the story as a whole.

Reading about soul mates is fun every once in a while, but I can't help that I wanted more of a connection between both couples before the explosion that is creating the "mate bond". At first, the mating seemed more like an assault rather than both parties participating willingly.

Eliana was a nice character to get to know. She definitely has a backbone and isn't afraid to call out BS when she's in the presence of it. Personally, I would have liked more of a fight from her before accepting the mating. It would have made for an even more entertaining story. I did enjoy the few nods from the author in cliché situations. It was a nice touch to the story!

Alastair was a hellhound shifter which was a first for me! Even after all these years reading paranormal romance there's still room to be surprised. I liked how in control he was but always did his best to treat Eliana respectfully. There was an instance or two that he became domineering too enough to expect Eliana to drop her human life and be with him 24/7. I don't know whatever happened to that plotline but I didn't like it.

There was a second mating in this novel right at the beginning and it threw me for a loop. I was expecting to have dual point of views but it never happened. It became clear after a few chapters that the second mating was there to progress the story in a certain direction.

The resolution to the "big bad problem" was too easy. It was way too straightforward with barely any problems. For a "big bad" that was powerful and that had stayed below everyone's radar for so long, I find his demise a little hard to believe.

Overall this had a nice story concept but wasn't without its flaws. It did end with a happy ending for the main couple but left quite a few possible future storylines open.

My Favorite Quotes:

"I don't think there is anywhere in the books about what you're capable of. That's something you have to find out as you go."

"Each of us protects all those around us who we love and can't live without."

Cyrus - Esther E. Schmidt
Only short but I loved this story of love and croc wrestling. Cyrus has been away from the swamps of his real home, he grew up there. Coming home unexpected events happen to change everything, he meets Bertie. The croc farm that she runs has hit some snags, her brother is causing problems and her Pa isn't much help either. I love the notion of almost instant love and a chemistry that is almost like an electric shock to the system, being swept away by it and being consumed. Cyrus is a strong, big, independent guy who is feeling a bit jaded with life and just wants to come back to his roots. I loved seeing this macho guy show his vulnerable side and not be afraid to do so. Bertie has had to be the strong one in her family, losing her mum hit hard. She is carrying on with her mothers dream, they both love crocs and had worked side by side, now scarred by one of the biggest she carry's on with some help. Because this story is only short you don't get the long drawn out get to know you, it doesn't really give you a lot of background or a chance to get to know or meet the other characters around them, but it is a sweet loving romance. I cant wait for the rest of this series and though it is short I still feel it is worth buying and reading, it is ideal for reading during a flight or weekend break. There is no cliff hanger so although the series is based around Cyrus family it can be read alone, so you do not have to be tied to reading them all unless you want to.

Tyler - Esther E. Schmidt
Yet another fantastic read from Esther, I am loving these guys from Arion MC. Hot, tough, def Alpha but underneath there is this softness for their women. They fall fast and hard when they meet "The One", there is no hesitation in claiming them. But it would be boring if there wasn't something to complicate the straight smooth sailing love affair between these couples, threats and demands for money are amongst the twists in this story. We also get glimpses of future stories from other characters and some awesome news. Tyler comes across as a nice down to earth guy, he does what he has to when it comes to keeping the club guys and ol ladies safe but otherwise is a quiet gentle type of guy. Riddley is quite surprising, strong and capable in her business, her weakness is family. The MC step up to help, men and women alike, if one is threatened then they feel they all are. I love that in some cases it is the women that take charge in some areas of their relationships, not just letting the guys rule. Well written with a nice flow, enough content to get your teeth into and characters to fall in love with.

Elsie - Esther E. Schmidt
  Arc for an honest review.
Elsie is tough when it comes to the "Gators" but not when it comes to men, having been hurt twice before she is just not interested.
Dale is strong in all things until Elsie.
This is mostly a sweet love story but there is nothing that is completely smooth sailing. With an escapee "Gator" and a women who is spiteful in the extreme, there is much more than just falling in love. Not a very long book but plenty of content to get you and keep you interested and wanting more of this family of siblings, each is a great character and they have a fantastic bond with each other.
The "Gators in the stories are characters in their own right, often up to mischief, their antics are funny though I wouldn't want to be face to face with one.
I do like that Esther has some humour added in this series as well as the drama, it makes it fun reading and not all deep and serious. The sex scenes are not to explicit or detailed, but enough to be good and natural.
I have enjoyed all Esther's books but I must say this series is some of her best work, keeping an even balance between the drama, love and some humour isn't that easy to do, but she has mastered it in these and that is what helps to make them fantastic reading.
