Pete the Cat and his school shoes! Rockin' into the first day of school! I would use this book as a first day get to know you book. I would have each student cut out, color, and write on a shoe telling me 5 things he/she likes.

In this Llama Llama book, Llama Llama goes to school for the first time and he does not know what to do without his mama there with him. At the beginning, it takes Llama Llama some time to get use to school, but his teacher makes him feel comfortable about being at school. Llama Llama then begins to feel more comfortable about school. I would use this book in my class to show my students that may not feel uncomfortable about coming to school for the very first time without their mom or dad.  I would show them how Llama Llama felt at the beginning, but he ended up feeling better about school.

"Miss. Bindergarten Gets Ready For Kindergarten" is a great book to read on a first day of school to show the students how the teacher Miss. Bindergarten how to prepare for her class and how her students were very excited about coming to school. In the story Miss Bindergaren prepares her kindergarten classroom while her new kindergartens get ready for kindergarten. The author, Joseph Slate, used begging sounds to flow along and rhyming words to help keep readers engaged. I think this book will make students more excited about their first day at kindergarten. I can use this book in my classroom for an alphabet lesson or a back to school lesson.
