Gyre
Gyre - Jessica Gunn Gyre - Jessica Gunn first I received this in exchange for a review.

I found this to be confusing, each chapter been from either Trevor or Chelsea view put started to grate. Especially when things from the previous chapter were said from the other persons view point. so to me it was growing tired going over the same stuff. I understand that maybe that was the best way to get things across but didn't work for me.
I thought the story line was intriguing, an ancient war between Atlantis and Lemuria and Trevor and Chelsea been on opposite sides and trying to stop some ancient Atlantian artefacts from falling in to the wrong hands.
I found the character of Trevor to be annoying and moanie, he had conflicts and seemed to dwell on that which I found tiresome.
Chelsea was slightly better, not has conflicted but she still grated at times.
Overall it was how the book was written that put me off and stopped me from really enjoying it.

The Widening Gyre (Spenser, #10)
The Widening Gyre (Spenser, #10) - Robert B. Parker Not my favourite Spenser title, but still enjoyable. I enjoy how the character and his relationships actually evolve and change. Those aspects were the highlights here more than the mystery.

Gyre
Gyre: Atlas Link Series, Book 1 - Jessica Gunn

Chelsea didn't mean to teleport. But did she mean to be such an annoying character?

Atlantis and Lemuria. Both sunken continents and at war with each other. In this mess Chelsea teleports, to a very secret navy base in the middle of the ocean. But don't worry, only Chelsea is special enough to succeed.

Chelsea annoyed me. If there ever was a character that was so special and had such powers and didn't question anything. She immediately leaves her family and former life behind in order to be with Trevor, her insta-love. The only other thing she finds important is her career in archeology.

I still believe the premise was promising, but since it is one of those blurbs that gives away at least half of the book, it never got really exciting. I've been reading some reviews and they are all very positive so it would seem I was the odd one out, because at times I really was struggling. I never felt the drive to continue and it was fine for me to put it down (even for days at a time). It was not what I expected and frankly, I was a bit disappointed with Gyre.

Thanks to the publisher for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

The Widening Gyre
The Widening Gyre - Robert B. Parker

When a state representative is getting blackmailed with a film of his wife having sex with another man, he hires Spenser to get to the bottom of things for him. But when Spenser learns the man's identity, he's bitten off more than he can chew, especially with him preoccupied with Susan Silverman being out of town.

I was needing a quick read before taking on another fantasy read and The Widening Gyre fit the bill. It got the job done.

The book started slow, with Spenser moping because Susan Silverman was out of town. Even when Susan's not around, she manages to suck the life out of things. Anyway, Spenser gets on a security detail for a state representative with an alcoholic wife and things spin out from there.

Spenser did some great detective work when he wasn't pining for Susan in this one, gradually piecing together the identity of the blackmailer and then stirring up a hornet's nest when he finds out who the man's father is. There isn't a whole lot of action in this one but when it comes, Parker makes it count.

So yeah, I only gave this a three despite enjoying the shit out of parts of it. Firstly, there was very little Hawk. Secondly, there was way too much of Spenser and Susan discussing their relationship when they finally crossed paths again halfway through the book. Are there people out there who actually enjoy Susan Silverman having such a large role in the books?

Despite the abundance of Susan and lack of Hawk, I still enjoyed this book for the most part. 3.5 out of 5.
