What was this even supposed to be?
Waiting, Hoping, Wishing - Nic Starr

Because it read like one big info-dump.

And a boring one at that.

It was all told, nothing really going on.

There was no real plot, the characters were mere sketches.

And it was surprisingly boring for something that short.

The pity: it was free, and normally that should be like a marketing thing for an author, but it the quality is that abysmal, it will destroy any chance I will go and search for something else this autor has written.

Landline by Rainbow Rowell
Landline: A Novel - Rainbow Rowell

Hmm, just recently I’ve decided that I’m going to read Rainbow Rowell. For some reason, I chose to start off with Landline, which is her most recent release. I decided to go into this book not really knowing anything. But after the first couple of chapters, it was pretty obvious where this story might go.

I was expecting quite a lot, though.

I’d heard so much about the humor in this book, and I do agree that at some moments, Georgie was pretty funny! I didn’t really see the chemistry in Neal and Georgie’s relationship for a LONG time. The only time I started to feel their chemistry was probably towards the very end of the book.

The parts of the book where Georgie had to work on her show. Like, Georgie, your husband went alone so that you could work on show. So, work on the damn show! She wrote something for Jeff’d Up and then after I never really heard of Georgie putting effort into her show. It was more of her going into flashbacks with Neal and then having Seth tell her what a jerk Neal is (in present and flashback).

I understood that Seth was her friend, but personally, he just seemed whiny to me. And let’s not mention the fact that at the very end, when we needed no problems:

Seth decides to claim his love for Georgie. Like, why? Why did he have to do that? Couldn’t he just leave Georgie alone for once and try not to make her feel pressured, and what perfect timing than when she’s leaving for the airport for Neal and the kids in Omaha . . .

(spoiler show)

I felt like this book was okay. At some parts I remember feeling very bored, but there was one thing that did push me forward to read this. And it has to be the conversations and dialogue. I LOVED the talking in this book, and thankfully this book has plenty.

There were moments where I just put this book down in the middle of a paragraph because I wasn’t really interested or invested of where this story was going. The ending was very cute though!

Overall, Landline was a book that had an interesting premise that I feel like could’ve been executed better. There is great dialogue in this, and it does get more interesting towards the end. I’m not going to recommend this, because I feel like fans of Rainbow Rowell should just check it out for themselves. You might not enjoy this if you’re not a fan of Rainbow Rowell already.

Thanks for reading my review everyone and until the next one! :D

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson (The Remnant Chronicles #1)
The Kiss of Deception - Mary E. Pearson

I just finished reading this today, since I have a beautiful pile of 22 books to get through. I know.

Anyway, to be honest, I never had high expectations from The Kiss of Deception to begin with in the first place. A princess runs away on her wedding day and settles down in a small, remote town as a tavern maid. But then, two mysterious men enter the town . . . one of which is the jilted prince and the assassin set out to kill her.

But, oh no! As soon as these two men see tavern maid Lia, they’ve fallen head over heels for her. I can guarantee you, if every assassin or prince began to fall in love with people as soon as they see them in first sight, nothing would get done in any nation. Mark my words.

The fact that a good three quarters of this book was about Lia’s life. Lia wakes up in the morning to take a bath, then she starts working, but, oh! A soldier flirts with her so she drops hot mugs on his crotch and then she laughs with her best friend! Now we’re in the point of view from the prince and the assassin! Lia is so beautiful, Lia is so brave! Lia is fearless! While the prince and the assassin or babbling off I’m sitting here wondering if I should build a temple for Lia in my house.

Idk Whatever animated GIF

But, as a main character, Lia wasn’t unbearable. Lia was actually pretty nice to read about—though I would recommend the fact that if you’re waiting to admire Lia as much as the prince and the assassin (just kidding, that would be borderline obsession) then you may want to stick around until the last quarter of the book. That’s where Lia truly shines.

It can take years to mold a dream. It takes only a fraction of a second for it to be shattered.

As a book that is supposed to be Fantasy, I learned more about this world in the last quarter than I did for most of this book!

While this book isn’t the worst, it isn’t the best either. I enjoyed this book, but when I think about it at the end of the day, this book doesn’t really leave an everlasting impression on me. I enjoyed the fact that Lia was willing to accept the consequences of her choices, and she never really pushed her feelings on others. She wasn’t whiny, which was great! I also liked how it was confusing who was the prince and who was the assassin, though when we do find out who is who I kind of felt like we were back to square one with the plot of the story.

“I trust you all slept well,” I said, deliberately keeping my tone light. I returned Malich’s glare with a tight-lipped grin.

“Yes, we did,” Kaden answered quickly.

“I’m sorry to hear that.”

Overall, The Kiss of Deception is quite deceiving with the looks of the characters. Although this world was unique (more delved into religion than other worlds) it wasn’t the best of what I’ve read. I do like the main character, but I think that this concentrated a bit much on the love story bit. If you’re looking to love this book, then you might like the last quarter more! I have decided to read the sequel, The Heart of Betrayal, and maybe after, I’ll decide whether or not I want to continue this series.

Maybe there was no one way to define it. Maybe there were as many shades of love as the blues of the sky.

Thanks for reading my review everyone, and hope you all have a great day! :D

Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge
Crimson Bound - Rosamund Hodge

When Rachelle was fifteen she was good—apprenticed to her aunt and in training to protect her village from dark magic. But she was also reckless— straying from the forest path in search of a way to free her world from the threat of eternal darkness. After an illicit meeting goes dreadfully wrong, Rachelle is forced to make a terrible choice that binds her to the very evil she had hoped to defeat.

Three years later, Rachelle has given her life to serving the realm, fighting deadly creatures in an effort to atone. When the king orders her to guard his son Armand—the man she hates most—Rachelle forces Armand to help her find the legendary sword that might save their world. As the two become unexpected allies, they uncover far-reaching conspiracies, hidden magic, and a love that may be their undoing. In a palace built on unbelievable wealth and dangerous secrets, can Rachelle discover the truth and stop the fall of endless night?

Inspired by the classic fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, Crimson Bound is an exhilarating tale of darkness, love, and redemption.

This is going to be a short review. Because I’ve already written this review three times. This is my fourth. And my laptop loves being uncooperative. The first time, my laptop died, the second time, I forgot to save changes, and the third time I lost internet connection.

Anyway, I expected to really love this book. I didn’t, unfortunately. I really wasn’t feeling this book a lot. I do remember enjoying Cruel Beauty a lot.

I guess as a main character, Rachelle was okay. She was quite complex and sometimes she made decisions that made no sense to me just because she was feeling angry or betrayed over stupid issues. She wasn’t a bad character, but overall, she was kind of frustrating and too complex.

And the love triangle. Don’t get me started on this. I hated it. It was not a love triangle. UGH.

The mythology and the narrating was pretty fun to read about though! I didn’t mind that! I love the way Rosamund Hodge can tell a story! :D This story isn’t all Little Red Riding Hood, but I did enjoy it!

Overall, Crimson Bound is a book I liked, but there were certain points that kind of annoyed me. I liked the world, thought it was creative, but I felt like it could've been executed better.

Sorry you had to read this review guys! It's not my best . . . until the next one, hopefully!

Everything That Makes You by Moriah McStay
Everything That Makes You - Moriah McStay

One girl. Two stories. Meet Fiona Doyle. The thick ridges of scar tissue on her face are from an accident twelve years ago. Fiona has notebooks full of songs she’s written about her frustrations, her dreams, and about her massive crush on beautiful uber-jock Trent McKinnon. If she can’t even find the courage to look Trent straight in his beautiful blue eyes, she sure isn’t brave enough to play or sing any of her songs in public. But something’s changing in Fiona. She can’t be defined by her scars anymore.

And what if there hadn’t been an accident? Meet Fi Doyle. Fi is the top-rated female high school lacrosse player in the state, heading straight to Northwestern on a full ride. She’s got more important things to deal with than her best friend Trent McKinnon, who’s been different ever since the kiss. When her luck goes south, even lacrosse can’t define her anymore. When you’ve always been the best at something, one dumb move can screw everything up. Can Fi fight back?

Hasn’t everyone wondered what if? In this daring debut novel, Moriah McStay gives us the rare opportunity to see what might have happened if things were different. Maybe luck determines our paths. But maybe it’s who we are that determines our luck.

I honestly felt like not much happened in this book. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m used to really fast-paced books! And the story about Fiona’s scars was done quite well up to a point. But then some things happened that I wasn’t really sure what to think of.

In the synopsis it mentions that Fiona can’t be defined by her scars anymore. But, really, it’s more about her gaining more self-confidence after the surgery that helps heal her scars. I do like the fact that it showed that since David, her first boyfriend came before her surgery, it didn’t mean he was “the one”. But at the same time, I felt it was really pushed. I didn’t see why Fiona wanted to date David in the first place.

(spoiler show)

Honestly, if I had to choose stories, I would choose Fiona’s. Fi was kind of really rude and up to the point where she was plain insensitive to others’ feelings. And, since we kind of knew Trent’s role in the “real story” it was hard to read about him in Fi’s story.

Although the concept was nice of trying to combine how things could’ve been different for the same person, and definitely the thing about that scars, I didn’t connect. I didn’t really feel the story. I liked the way both stories ended . . . but, oh well. Maybe this book is just not for me.

“If we tried to analyze how every little thing changes us, nobody would get anything done.”

Overall, Everything That Makes You is an interesting take on what-if questions and if different situations are honestly better for us. Though I thought this was executed well up to a certain point, I felt no connection to other characters except sympathizing with Fiona. I liked the story, there were points where I would say I enjoyed it quite a bit. But, I didn’t love it. I would recommend this to people who want to try it out, but it’s just a simple read. I don’t think this has really changed my perspective on anything.

Thanks for reading my review on this guys, and hope you have a great day! Until the next one!
