Friday Reads - June 22, 2018
Wishing Lake (A Finding Home Novel) - Regina Hart
After the Eclipse: A Mother's Murder, a Daughter's Search - Sarah Perry
The Spirit of '76: From Politics to Technology, the Year America Went Rock & Roll (Kindle Single) - David Browne
Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood - Trevor Noah
Cafe Au Lait - Liane Spicer
Welcome to Last Chance - Cathleen Armstrong
If Ever I Would Leave You: A Montana Rescue Prequel - Susan May Warren
Submerged - Dani Pettrey

This week I read Wishing Lake by Regina Hart (my favorite in the Finding Home series...so far), After the Eclipse by Sarah Perry, and The Spirit of '76 by David Browne. I hope to get to reviewing those books over the weekend.

Something is screwy with USAFE's e-lending system, so I had to put One in a Million on the backburner until the system is working again.

This weekend I want to get Trevor Noah's Born a Crime (borrowed a physical copy from library) and Café Au Lait by Liane Spicer (PRIME lending library borrow) read. I need to write my personal essay and resume for my grad school applications. Transcripts have been ordered (I swear the Air Force loves to make easy, mundane tasks HELLA complicated via the Internet....). Waiting on my mentor/friend for the recommendation letter. Oh man....it's really happening!!!!

Next week I want to get to Welcome to Last Chance (Last Chance #1) by Cathleen Armstrong, If Ever I Would Leave You (Montana Rescue #0.5) by Susan May Warren, and Submerged (Alaskan Courage #1) by Dani Petry. The first and last book are Prime lending library reads and it is my hope I can be done with these books and cancel my Prime membership by the end of the month. As if I don't have enough series to keep track of, now I am starting new ones.

Happy Reading!

Leave No Trace - Mindy Mejia

After reading “Everything You Want Me to Be” last year, I knew this was an author I would follow. In this outing she gives us a very different book but with equally compelling characters.

The blurb gives a great snapshot of the story so I won’t get into the plot too much. The MC’s are 2 damaged people who have more in common than you initially think. Maya Stark is a speech therapist at Congdon Psychiatric Facility. Her youth, innovative style & maroon hair set her apart. She lives with her dad Brian who really wishes she worked somewhere else. Especially after her…em…spot of trouble a few years back.

Lucas Blackthorne is Congdon’s infamous new resident. After vanishing with his father 10 years ago, his sudden reappearance has caused quite a stir. The media & groupies are camped out at the gates waiting to hear his story but Lucas isn’t talking. Then he meets Maya. And one struggling outsider recognizes another.

Don’t go into this expecting a thrill-a-minute ride. There are moments of action but that’s not what this is about. Like the previous book, it’s about the characters & the effect of the ripples they cause as they pass through each other’s lives. On one hand, it’s a compelling mystery as we slowly learn the MC’s histories. On the other, it touches on deeper themes such as family, loss, memories & the grey area around right vs. wrong.

Strong secondary characters flesh out the story as we follow Maya & Lucas on their deeply personal search to understand the past. The last quarter has some reveals that may make you rethink what you thought you knew. And while a couple of them may stretch disbelief a teensy bit, it’s all part of the journey in this strong, well written tale.

Life Reimagined: Leave Chaos Behind find Balance Thrive - Jason L. Ranck

Life Reimagined is one man's true story of how he was able to find balance in his career, family and his spiritual life. Mr. Ranck's life had been very career oriented and he had specific goals he wished to achieve by a certain age (income, etc.), but when his wife developed a serious illness and nearly died, he reassessed his goals. He saw his original plan not so much a priority in the end-- what would it matter if he had achieved a six figure income if his wife was gone, or his sons grown and distant? In this memoir, Mr. Ranck details the process of how he restored order to his life and set definite boundaries between work, family, and made more time for his personal spiritual life, and how you can too. He found that by working harder at work, eliminating work-related messages, etc. when at home allowed him more quality time with his family, and improved his focus when at work thus enabling him to actually do better while there. He also explains how taking planned vacations and journaling helped in the transformation from stressed out to relaxed and enjoying all aspects of his life. He admits that the process was not easy, as a lot of the habits, such as tackling work emails at home, were hard to break, but he says was well worth it.
I didn't find any typos or errors in the book and was pleased with that. I found it well written, well edited and very inspiring account of how he took back his life and became not only a better professional, but better husband and father as well. I would recommend this book to anyone to has been dealing with these very issues and wondered if it was possible to have a more normal relaxed life or had just resigned oneself to the crazy modern pace as a by-product of our modern life. I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

I thought I knew better than to make the same mistake twice.

To say I’ve never had good taste in men in as an understatement. When I met brooding Marine Ford Collier, I was certain he’s different than anyone else I’ve ever dated. He was honorable, charming, and sinfully dangerous in all the right ways. But I’ve been wrong before. My first lover ruined my life. And Ford may destroy my future. My heart tells me he’s innocent, but the facts tell me I’m wrong. Again. Going against the only family I have left could mean losing it all for a man who may be a traitor.
