New MCU Movies: The resounding success of The Mandalorian, Disney+ has kicked into high popularity, but still to know if the Marvel TV shows will have the same kind of success. But the real question stands, if people really need to watch these shows to understand the movies?

This volume had some great moments! This has been an interesting ride so far and I'm intrigued to see where this series goes.

Allow me to get the negative out of the way first. I did not particularly enjoy (and maybe didn't finish.....) the extra stuff in this voume. The annual was cute but unnecessary and the What If? was just meh. I was enjoying the series and then was abruptly interrupted with some random other stuff and I didn't really appreciate it.

Okay, getting to the good stuff.

There are few things that make my little feminist heart flutter more than badass women working together and having good male allies. The mystery is still on for most of the issue to find out who this new Thor is and why the hell some woman has Mjolnir. I love the progression as the man now known as Prince Odinson (former Thor) tries to figure it out, but the story isn't about him.

Thor is around and being generally awesome when she gets attacked by the Destroyer and that's when things really start to go in a fabulous and wonderful way, at least in my humble opinion. As the title suggests, the reader does finally find out who holds the Hammer.

Then there are lots of opinions about this choice of Mjolnir-wielder, not the least because she is a she but there are other reasons I've seen that people give to not like the decision. It's an interesting decision, to have a person such as she is be the one to wield the hammer, but after reading through more of some other titles, I feel pretty confident that they know what they're doing and have a longer plan. Especially given some of the Asgardian family drama that surrounds this volume.

While I appreciate that the Marvel Universe isn't handling a female Thor any better than the real world, I'm also glad to see the shift that happens here toward acceptance with some characters. It makes for a great moment that I'd rather not spoil with details. Suffice it to say that I wouldn't call anyone "over it" but I feel like the "who" and "why" are getting to be less important to some than the "what's she going to do with Mjolnir now that she has it".  Most of the volume was just kinda-good and meriting closer to 3 stars in my system, but then women working together and the good male ally that pushed it into the fourth star. It's a pretty awesome moment.

The cuts over to Malekith and his dealings are also very interesting in what is going on in this series and with these characters, but didn't grab my attention or focus as much as the royal family drama or the search for Thor's identity.

If you're curious, though, Prince Odinson's character does continue to have his own title, it's The Unworthy Thor. I've been trying to stick to women-written and/or women-titled comics, but I do plan to make an exception.

Has anyone else read this title or volume?

This post was sparked by my reading of Ms. Marvel: Last Days which resulted in me choking up multiple times while I was reading it. But this isn’t a review as such, although it will probably include spoilers so tread carefully if that’s something you’re avoiding!

What Last Days is doing is wonderful and noteworthy for a couple of reasons. From a purely personal point of view, Kamala’s story has been my entry into superhero comics. I love what G. Willow Wilson and the other creators involved have done with the story, the art, and especially the characters. Last Days is everything I love about this Ms. Marvel series, ramped up to 11. It’s also full of tension which (uh, spoiler) is not resolved at the end of this volume.

First, it’s a story which foregrounds Kamala and all the influential girls & women in her life, and MY HEART. We’ve seen Kamala have important relationships with other women throughout the series, but here a sizeable portion of the volume pulls together these threads all at once. This centering of female relationships is still all too rare, and it’s still making me choke up thinking about it. (The scene with her mom is just perfect, and Nakia, and CAROL. Everything hurts, but in a good way.)

Moreover, it’s a story where once again Kamala uses her faith as a touchstone for her own responses and beliefs. I’m not Muslim, but I am religious and this rang really true to me. It’s how I hope I would respond in similar circumstances, and at the same time it’s entirely born out of Kamala’s personal cultural and religious background.

Most of all, I loved the fact that this is a story about the end of the world which doesn’t simply posit that humanity is going down in flames. Yes: people freak out and do silly things and tear things apart. But not all of them. Not all the time. This is a book about the end of the world in which not only Kamala, but multiple other characters, react by reaching out, by doing their best to meet whatever’s coming with warmth and dignity.

This is the kind of apocalypse story I want more of. The kind that reminds us that humanity has grace in it as well as evil. Maybe some people can afford stories where everything and everyone is terrible. I can’t; I need stories that face the world and yet still have hope. This one does exactly that, and I want to read more that have this same realistic-yet-hopeful take.

In the end, this is a story which is generous to its characters, to us. Like the rest of Kamala’s stories, it’s full of determination and heart and humor. That the situation she’s facing now is one that she may not be able to solve, but that only makes the courage and kindness with which she faces it more powerful.

AHHH MS. MARVEL, YES! I am always so surprised by just how much I love this story–it keeps getting better. The arc on this one was really great and I just want mooooore.
