River City Dead (An Aggie Mundeen Mystery) (Volume 4) - Nancy G. West

This was a fun cozy mystery that was set on the Riverwalk in San Antonio. It was like taking a vacation while reading a mystery. I love the Riverwalk and have been there several times. This mystery took place during Fiesta. Aggie's friends are holding a convention and Sam is there as a detective because there has been a murder in the penthouse. Aggie wants so bad to help Sam, but she knows Sam hates for her to get involved. Of course, Aggie can't help it, she just wants to help. A fun, entertaining read where yes, Aggie does seem to go against Sam's wishes, but the murder does get solved. This is a great series with fun characters. Aggie always seems to get in trouble, but she does always get her man (or woman). Huge thanks to Henery Press for approving my request and to Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest review.

Book Haul for week of February 20
Pistols For Two - Georgette Heyer
Love In A Cold Climate - Nancy Mitford
The Pursuit of Love - Nancy Mitford
The Dressmaker - Rosalie Ham
Undeniably Yours - Heather Webber
Lethal Black Dress - Ellen Byerrum
Practical Sins for Cold Climates - Shelly Costa
Fit To Be Dead - Nancy G. West

MT took me on a belated weekend away for my birthday, to the Alpine National Park in northern Victoria.  It's my first time in Victoria's proper mountains and it was absolutely beautiful (pictures may be forthcoming).

A stop in Bright for lunch out last day (at a brewery MT was keen to try) was ever-so-conveniently just a few shops down from a bookstore - a small, but well-curated bookstore and I finally caved and picked up The Dressmaker by Rosalie Ham.  I haven't seen the movie yet but I want to, so I'm going to read the book first so I can yell at the screen about how they've gotten it all wrong.

As I was buying The Dressmaker, I asked about used bookshops in the area and I was directed to one right around the corner.  I almost missed it - I think my bathroom might be in a bigger space.  But she had a fabulous collection of books; again, really well curated to focus on fiction (Bright is ski-resort territory).  I picked up two Folio Society editions of Nancy Mitford's works: Love In A Cold Climate and The Pursuit of Love.  She had quite a selection of Georgette Heyers too but I can never remember which titles are good and which are... less good, so I settled on the only hardcover one she had: Pistols For Two.  I figured short stories gave me better odds that there would be a few good ones.

The last four are from the weekly post.  Two of them: Undeniably Yours: A Lucy Valentine Novel and Lethal Black Dress are the last books in series I've loved, each independently published by the author after their contracts with mainstream pubs weren't renewed.  The last two are Henery Press offerings - Henery Press hasn't given me a bad read yet, so I was willing to give these a go.

New books: 8

Read books: 3 (not counting re-reads)

Physical TBR pile: 207

Smart, But Dead - Nancy G. West

4 Stars!  #SmartbutDead  @HeneryPress   @NancyGWest_

Aggie's back and this time she's going to school. She's taking a class that the professor professes to of found a link to helping people live longer. Aggie is ecstatic!

Unfortunately, it's not working too well for the professor as he falls down dead right after one of his classes. Of course, Aggie is on the scene, she's going to figure out what or who happened along to end the professor's life.

Along the way, Aggie even takes her own "Orange is the New Black" adventure as she's jailed for B&E and possibly murder.

It's another cozy little mystery where Aggie is bound and determined to figure it out.

It was definitely entertaining and I totally recommend it!

Thanks to Henery Press and Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest review.

Smart, but Dead
Smart, But Dead - Nancy G. West

I loved the first two books in this series so I was really excited to read this one. After all the brilliant humor in the first two books the absolute nonexistence of humor in this book was such a letdown. In fact I couldn't find anything that I loved from the first two books in this book.

I could not stand Aggie in this book. Usually her humor really shines but as I said before there was no humor in this. This time around Aggie seemed absolutely desperate and pathetic when it came to Sam and completely inept and over her head when it came to her investigation. Some of the comments Aggie made about Sam and her love for him were just downright weird and creepy. I am all for a relationship between the two of them and have been from the start but can't see how Aggie thought her behavior would make Sam love her.

Aggie spent the whole book bumbling about "investigating" a murder. There were some consequences to her investigation which I wholeheartedly felt she deserved. Her stubbornness at trying to solve what happened (so that Sam would love her) was just unbearable at times. If it weren't for the fact that I felt like I had to write a review for this, I probably would have given up on this halfway through. Not even the action towards the end could really even save this for me.

I am not sure whether there will be more books in this series but I do know that if there are I won't be reading them. I really loved this series but this book was such a one-eighty from the other two that I just can't take anymore chances on this.

(I received an egalley of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.)

Reading progress update: I've read 15%.
Smart, But Dead - Nancy G. West

I have really enjoyed reading this series so when I saw that this book was up on Netgalley I snagged it up right away. So far this had been good except for the fact that Aggie is really being creepy about her love for Sam. I honestly don't remember her being this in love with Sam in the previous books. It's just awkward now with how much she mentions her love for him. Don't get me wrong I am a strong supporter of those two being in a relationship but she just reminds me too much of a squealing teenage girl right now.
