Under the Lights - Dahlia Adler

I usually open up my reviews with a general statement about the book, but fuck it, I'm just gonna skip right to discussing characters.

Well, I really liked Vanessa. She was funny, sarcastic, and oh so relatable. Not to mention, we need all the queer people of color we can get in literature #weneeddiversebooks.

In the beginning, Josh was a douche. A hilarious douche, but a douche nonetheless. But he grew up so much throughout the story and he also said this gem (I think?? Or was it Bri?): "fuck pleasing everybody else. You only live once. Who are you gonna do it for?"
Side note: that quote ^^ is amazing
One more thing about characters: Zander was a goddamn asshole. I felt sorry for him, but he was also a jerk.

I love the romance between Bri and Van. So adorable!!!

I liked the ending. I thought there was a few things not concluded but overall I was satisfied with how things finished.

Tl;dr version- I didn't fall in love with it, but it was enjoyable enough, and I do recommend it.

The Young Elites - Marie Lu

For now, I'm giving The Young Elites four stars. The rating may change but the fact remains that I did enjoy it immensely. It reminds me of Throne of Glass in that aspect, that I enjoyed it despite its flaws, although to be clear Throne of Glass is nothing like this book in any other way.

Adelina is not particularly a likable character. She can be a tad irritating at times. But she is always a fascinating character. I especially like how she's so vengeful and dark and she knows that she's being horrible but she also doesn't care. She doesn't really hit quite that level of darkness until the end, but her descent into darkness is fascinating to watch and I am so excited for that to continue in the sequel. Other characters I liked and/or found very interesting: Enzo, Violetta, Teren, Lucent, Michel, Raffaele...so basically all of them, haha.

A small thing, but I really appreciate that there's a few LGBT characters but it's not all there is to their personalities. And it's not a big deal, it's just casually said. I liked that. So...is Raffaele bisexual? I'm kind of uncertain, but for now I think he is.

The writing was really awkward and weird at times. The tense was weird, I just don't really like present tense narration.

Also, that epilogue though! Maeve sounds really cool and I can't wait to see more of this badass warrior princess. Secondly, please let there be some Lucent and Maeve romantic moments in the next book. I need this.

Tl;dr version- On a technical level, this book has a few flaws but I still really enjoyed it so four stars it is.

Catch a Falling Star - Kim Culbertson

This was a pleasant surprise! I wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. No insta love, and likable characters. Full review to come!

Silhouette of a Sparrow - Molly Beth Griffin

Wow, this is actually the first f/f romance I've ever read. I've read a fair amount of of m/m, but f/f is a first for me. And I'm glad I took a chance and tried something different.

Garnet's cool. She's relatable and I just really like her. At first I thought Isabella was too perfect. But as we get to know her, her flaws and vulnerabilities and struggles are revealed. Made her more realistic and I appreciate it.

Obviously I like the romance. It's very sweet and it's built on friendship and I just really enjoy it.

I like the setting (1920s Minnesota)! It felt authentic and true to the time period, although I admit I'm not an expert. But it worked for me

Tl;dr version- Well, I quite enjoyed this. It's probably not a book that will be a treasured favorite or anything, but it was good and I don't regret reading it.

Ungodly: A Novel (The Goddess War) - Kendare Blake

What the actual fuck did I just read? This whole trilogy...I have no idea what to think of it. I'm not sure if I liked it or disliked it. All I know is that I sped through this thing, eager for the conclusion.

Alright, something I need to rant about. Achilles is the bad guy? NOOOOOOO!!!! *screams* I acknowledge that Achilles is a proud, stubborn asshole, but goddamnit Song of Achilles really endeared me to him. I cannot stand that he is the antagonist. And he didn't even turn back to the good side!

Cassandra is one of the the most annoying, whiny little shitheads I have ever had to read about. Damn her. Yeah, I get that she lost people she cared about and hates the gods. But maybe if she actually went around killing them instead of just whining and promising she would kill them I would've found her more interesting. She's annoying and also boring. I also really don't like Henry, because he's so boring. It doesn't help that he is the reincarnation of Hector, whom I despise (because Patroclus is my favorite character). Athena is actually quite boring. And I'm disappointed. And I heavily disapprove of the romance between her and Odysseus. A large part of the mythology surrounding her is that she's a virgin. That may sound terrible and sexist, but she choose to live that way so it's fine.  I don't approve of messing with the original mythology just so we can have a love story. Fuck that.

I also feel like saying one more time: I don't like Apollo in this trilogy. He never did anything to endear himself to me.

Characters I don't want to kill: Ares (yeah! He finally switched to the good side!), Hermes, Calypso, Odysseus

Um, that ending? Idk what to think of it. I mean, it was satisfying to see the conflict end but I'm still hung up over Achilles being their enemy.

Tl;dr version- So, this was a rollercoaster. I didn't like a lot of characters. But I loved a few, the plot was exciting, the writing was gory and bloody and at the same time kind of beautiful. And I'm glad things finally got settled out.
