Mixtape Potluck Cookbook
Mixtape Potluck Cookbook - Questlove
I liked the idea about this cookbook and in the introduction, it is explained in detailed how this cookbook came about. It’s a song inspired potluck. A song is selected and individuals are invited to prepare/cook something as the tune played. The dish didn’t have to reflect what they were listening to, it was just a reflection of the person preparing the dish. This sounded like an entertaining way to prepare some food, get friends together and get to know one another.

I was entertained with the music choices for some of the individuals chosen for the book. Martha Stewart’s Grape Focaccia’s was paired with Snoop Dog’s “Life of Da Party” and a cocktail prepared by Dave Arnold called Red Skies at Night featuring white run, wildberry honey, red chile flakes and vegetable glycerin that was paired with “Sounds of Silence” by the Beastie Boys. This cocktail looked good until I read the ingredients, as it reminded me of a drink I used to drink, the Slow Comfortable Screw. I guess I got tired of the orange juice.

It’s a very organized cookbook: with the recipes broken down into categories and there is even a list of guests that are included in the book. There’s an index and some tips on how to create your own playlist. Every recipe in the book has an illustration and I enjoyed reading the little paragraphs that accompanied each recipe about how the song was chosen. It was an interesting and fun cookbook and I enjoyed reading the Afterward and Introduction. Unfortunately, the recipes were nothing that I would fix. Spinach Pie, Tuna Pasta a la Popowendy, Thit Kho Tau, Bourbon Raspberry Tea- those are just a few random pages of the book. I did enjoy the book; the idea was fantastic but the recipes were not of my liking.

Questlove Says Obama Once Asked Him To Play French Montana's 'Pop That' At A White House Party

From his public playlists featuring artist like Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Cardi B and J. Cole to the various winks and nods to the culture in his speeches, Barack Obama has made it clear that he is a fan of hip-hop music.

But thanks to famed drummer for The Roots, Questlove, we have an even more clear idea of just how well-versed the 45th President of the United States is in hip-hop music and culture.

On an appearance on Malcolm Gladwell and Rick Rubin’s ‘Broken Record’ podcast, QuestLove told the story of then-president Obama interrupting QuestLove’s 6-hour set at the final White House party, to request a song by French Montana.

“[Obama’s] coming up to me like, ‘Do you have French Montana?’ And I’m like, ‘Sir! I don’t have the clean versions of that.’ He’s like, ‘We’re all adults here. Play it!’ I’m like, ‘Sir, I’m not gonna play ‘Pop that pu**y, b***h.’'” Questlove recalled, paraphrasing the hook of Montana’s 2013 lead single “Pop That.”

Creative Quest
Creative Quest - Ahmir Questlove Thompson
I Picked Up This Book Because: Curiosity

The Story:

This book is like a class on creativity. What is it, the habits of people who have it. What you can do to get it, increase it, evolve it. As with any class I’ve ever taken there were some very interesting parts and some parts that I completely tuned out. I like to think there were more of the former but don’t ask me for specific examples.

A lot of Questlove’s learning and teachings on the subject obviously were learned from someone who creates music, however, he does explore in to the creativity of writers, chefs and even comedians. I think this book would be beneficial for anyone who is in a creative field but also anyone who is trying to figure out how they can think differently about any subject.

This is one of those books that I think you read, you try to apply it to life then you read again to see how well you interpreted it and if you need to adjust. Or maybe you will get a completely new lesson in the reread.

The Random Thoughts:

something to food about
something to food about: Exploring Creativity with Innovative Chefs - Questlove,Ben Greenman,Kyoko Hamada,Anthony Bourdain

something to food about by Questlove falls into many different categories. It is a coffee table book; the cover and the photography are conversation starters. It is a documentation of interviews. It is an academic book for it highlights the food philosophy of both Questlove and these chefs. Ultimately, it is a food lover's book, with photographs to salivate over, chefs whose work to aspire to, and food ideas to contemplate.
