Vintage: A Ghost Story
Vintage: A Ghost Story - Berman, Steve,Steve Berman

This was interesting enough to keep my attention, and it thankfully wasn't a ghost love story, because that concept is just weird. What else is weird is that the MC is never named. Not once. So I'll call him Melindo (Gordon) because why not.

Melindo is 17 and lives with his aunt after his parents kicked him out of the home for being gay. He stumbles upon a ghost one night while walking home, only to find out the ghost is his town's very own urban legend. Josh was killed in the 50s on that stretch of road and has been seen walking it ever since. Melindo is actually able to talk to Josh. Josh is hot and Melindo is horny and desperate, so why not see where this goes, right?

Um...because Josh is a ghost. That might be a reason. IJS.

It was a little strange for Melindo and his best friend Trace to be so blasé about Melindo's ghost whispering abilities. Sure, they're into the macabre and they crash funerals for funsies, but at some point, I'd have expected them to step back and question reality just a little.

I liked that Trace wasn't the overbearing girl friend so typical of M/M (probably helps that this isn't actually M/M) and that the ghost story doesn't go in quite the direction I expected. Melindo's aunt was pretty cool, and I liked Second Mike a lot. Still, I never felt like I connected with any of the characters or really cared about what would happen in the end. It was a quick read though, and the writing flowed well, so it was a nice way to spend a couple of days.

Book Review: Tales From A Not-So-Fabulous Life
Dork Diaries: Tales from a Not-So-Fabulous Life - Rachel Renée Russell

Title: Tales From A Not-So-Fabulous Life
Author: Rachel Renee Russell
Series: Dork Diaries, #1
Format: hardcover
Length: 282 pages
Rating: 3 stars

Synopsis:
Meet Nikki Maxwell! She's starting eighth grade at a new school—and her very first diary packed with hilarious stories and art in Book One of the #1 New York Times bestselling Dork Diaries series!
New school. New mean girl. New crush. New diary so I can spill about all of it…
I put a lot of really personal stuff in this diary along with my sketches and doodles.
But, mostly it’s about how TRAUMATIC it was transferring to my new private middle school, Westchester Country Day.
And, how a lot of the CCP (Cool, Cute & Popular) kids were really SNOBBY and made my life TOTALLY miserable. People like, oh, I don’t know, maybe…
MACKENZIE HOLLISTER!!
And, it just so happened that I got stuck with a locker right next to hers. I could NOT believe I had such CRAPPY luck. I knew right then and there it was going to be a VERY, VERY long school year :-( !

Favourite character: Nikki
Least favourite character: MacKenzie

Mini-review: This series is like my guilty pleasure, I swear. I love all the sass and I appreciate the pop-culture references of the times (Jonas Brothers, High School Musical, etc.) and her obsession with Tyra Banks. I also love how she has sassy speeches in her head that she’s too scared to say out loud. I relate big time.

Fan-cast:
Nikki Maxwell - Kassidy Slaughter
MacKenzie Hollister - Taylor Ann Thompson
Brandon Roberts - Will Verchere-Gopaulsingh
Chloe Garcia - Mya-Lecia Naylor
Zoey Franklin - Skai Jackson

Jane Steele by Lindsay Faye (audiobook)
Jane Steele - Lyndsay Faye,Susie Riddell

I'm not sure who it was who described this book as being for those who thought the novel Jane Eyre could have benefited from a higher body count, but they were right. I was only middling in my opinion of Jane Eyre, but I quite liked this odd book inspired by it. I'm not sure what to call it, although I'm not sure I agree with those who describe it as satirical.

Anyway, it was lots of fun, and I enjoyed it more than I expected to. (I know I initially decided that I wanted to read it because I kept seeing others reading it, but usually these popular novels fall flat for me.) Oh, and I quite liked Quillfeather in the end.

A Christmas Party by Georgette Heyer
A Christmas Party - Georgette Heyer

This took me quite a while to get through, and I didn't finish it in time for the 24 Festive Tasks game, but I still really enjoyed it. The idea is that the master of the house is murdered at Christmas when the house is full of guests; suspicions ensue. I had guessed the murderer but I couldn't quite work out how they had done it, but that added more to my enjoyment than it detracted from it. It was quite clever overall.

Loved it on Audio, and I knew I would...With Full-Cast narration, it totally rocks.  If you've ever thought about trying out an Audiobook, this is good series to start with, the only issue may be that it could you spoil you for most books which only have one, maybe two, narrators.  I read an ARC of this earlier in 2018 and my review can be seen here.
