Backwoods vampire series - original and unusual
Redneck Volume 1: Deep in the Heart - Donny Cates

Bartlett and his adopted family are redneck vampires living out of town and getting along as best they can. Mistakes are made and rivalries are played out, resulting in death and destruction.

The characters are developed and interesting and the plot moves along at a fair pace. The artwork is reasonably clear and the series is original and worth a look if you’re after something a little different. Volume 2 to come.

Save a Truck, Ride a Redneck (Southern Eclectic Novella)
Save a Truck, Ride a Redneck - Molly Harper, Amanda Ronconi

If you read the Southern Eclectic novels, this is a prequel back story for one of the characters, Marianne, and how she ended up with Carl.

It's short, but it covers all the bases, introducing most of the family, including one character that dies before the full-length books begin.  We get a bit more insight into Donna, Marianne's curmudgeonly mother.  Less funny than most of the other books, it's sweet in its way and since I went in already invested in the characters, I enjoyed it well enough.

Review: Save a Truck, Ride a Redneck by Molly Harper
Save a Truck, Ride a Redneck (Southern Eclectic Book 1) - Molly Harper

Heading back home to spend the summer before going to law school, Marianne begins to question her life goals and dreams. She’s always feared being stuck in small-town Sackett, Georgia, but now the idea has a little more appeal, as long as she can maintain some distance between herself and her large family.

Carl and Marianne were high school sweethearts, but when Marianne thought Carl might propose before Marianne headed off to college, she panicked and left him. After four years, the sparks are still there, but can they move forward instead of looking back?

Save a Truck, Ride a Redneck is a short novella that kicks off the new Southern Eclectic series by Molly Harper. While not full of Ms. Harper’s usual snark and wit, the story is sweet and charming. However, I’m a bit curious as to its place in the series. I say this because there is a HUGE spoiler in the beginning of the book: a family tree which shows Marianne and Carl married with kids, as well as the death a major character who is still alive in this story. I really wish the family tree had been left out of the novella, and added once the series had progressed to match what the graphic displays.

Other than that little issue, Carl and Marianne share a sweet romance. The novella sets the stage for the upcoming series by developing the basic framework of the world. Save a Truck, Ride a Redneck was entertaining and engrossing enough that it got me interested and invested in the characters, and I want to know more about the McCready family.

My Rating: B/B- Liked It, but I had a small issue

Review of Redneck
Redneck Volume 1: Deep in the Heart - Donny Cates

I have never read a book about redneck vampires so I thought this graphic novel was kind of fun.

It also shows that holding a grudge against a family only brings bad things.

The Bowmans love their family and their guns and they have a BBQ joint. They raise cows and drain the blood to drink and use the meat to make mighty fine BBQ.

The older siblings are getting tired of being hidden away, and decide to go to town but something horrible happens and brings their world crashing down.

Overall, it was an okay story but I felt like it was kind of a broad overview of the family and thought it might have more of the BBQ joint and that good ole boy feel but it didn't. Though I am curious as to what will happen with the family.

The illustrations were pretty good too.

THE NINE LIVES OF FRANK TIPTON by Teresa Powers
The Nine Lives of Frank Tipton (The Redn... The Nine Lives of Frank Tipton (The Redneck Fairy Tales of Shady Holler Trailer Park) (Volume 1) - Teresa Powers

Audrey is so in love with Frank when he asks her to move in with him.  During their time together, the love fades quickly.  Now all Audrey wants to do is kill Frank, no matter who gets in the way.

This is one of the funniest tongue-in-cheek books I have read.  I laughed out loud as Audrey makes her plans as well as her reasoning behind each plan.  I could hear this as an audio book and can hear the drawl as the story is told.  This is dark humor at its best.  I plan on reading more of this series.
