The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith
The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight - Jennifer E. Smith

This is a nice little book that covers the space of a day. (American) heroine and (English) hero end up sitting together on a flight from the United States to England, both ducking across the pond for family events.

Heroine Hadley’s family was torn to pieces when her father fell in love with an Englishwoman and abandoned them, and now she’s expected to attend the London wedding. This story is as much about family as romance.

As for the romance, I think the author managed the culture clash aspects well, and didn’t push things too far over such a short timeframe.

A sweet little book overall, though I’m not sure the father deserved to be so easily forgiven!

Okay, are you ready for some gushing? You'd better be, because this book absolutely blew me away. Maybe it's because I haven't read a really good contemporary book in a while. Maybe it's because I've been in an overly sappy mood lately. It doesn't matter. The fact remains that this book stole my heart, and had me sighing happily at the end.

Lest you think that this is a plain and simple case of instalove, let me assure you right now that this isn't the case. You can trust me when I say that I'd be the first one to complain about that. While this is definitely an instant attraction, the relationship that builds is slow and sweet. I think I might have a bit of an obsession with adorable British boys too and, well, that comes into play here.

My favorite part of The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight though was the thin line it walked between sweet and somber. This isn't just a mushy romance. It has depth. Both of our characters are dealing with things that aren't exactly pleasant, and their chance meeting is the one thing that holds them together. Sometimes when YA characters are dealing with family issues, I shake my head and roll my eyes. It's hard not to see them as obnoxious. In this case, both of them were so honest about everything. I had to go through a divorce with my family too, and I know how hard it is to deal. I understood.

Vague review, I know. Still, you can rest assured that I am only doing it for your own good! This is a sweet book. It's a quick read. It's full happy sigh moments, slight teary moments, and big smiles. If you're looking for something to get lost in for a bit? I recommend this.

Reading progress update: I've read 220 out of 236 pages.
The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight - Jennifer E. Smith

*swoon*

*melt*

*sob*

That pretty much sums up my reading of this so far. I'm 16 pages away from the end. SIXTEEN PAGES, and I can't finish it until lunch. Ah, the unfairness of it all. I'm hoping for a very adorable, very happy ending.

This was an incredibly sweet YA romance with a lot of family themes and growing.

"People who meet in airports are seventy-two percent more likely to fall for each other than people who meet anywhere else." This book is pretty easy to read, pretty easy to predict, and pretty easy to love. The concept seems a little unrealistic, but not so much though--it still gives you a lot of hope for your own life and for relationships.

Family is really the big theme of this book, with Oliver and Hadley both having different dynamics with theirs and flying from the US to the UK for family matters. Hadley definitely grew in the 24 hour span of this book and it was impressive to see her maturity and how she came to understand her parents a little more than she had.

Scenes from the past were interspersed well with the present, which really gave the present tense a lot of effect.

This was really well written, and I recommend for anyone looking for something a little deeper than a YA romance.
